28 Brilliant Travel Hacks

Genius idea!

I love coming across new ways to make things in life easier. This holds true especially for travel-related situations.

Like a wise man (Benjamin Franklin) once said, “time is money”. I definitely keep this adage in mind at work and when travelling. Another thing I value is space. I think I’ve finally mastered the art of bringing just enough of what I need and not too much extra (while this is true for me, we still always bring extra stuff for Lucas). Keeping those two things in mind, I am always looking for things that will save me time and space when travelling.

In the post 28 Brilliant Travel Hacks You Need To Know For Summer Travel, I came across some new ways (and some that I’ve seen before)to help simplify things related to travel. Continue reading 28 Brilliant Travel Hacks

Update: Why Do Airplanes Dim Lights?

Ever Wonder Why Airplanes Dim Lights On Takeoff?

Last week I wrote a post which asked a very good question related to flying. It was something that I never really thought about before. The post was written due to an article that I came across from Travel + Leisure.

The post was about: Ever Wonder Why Airplanes Dim Lights On Takeoff?

I thought the answer given in the T+L article made a lot of sense. After seeing a tweet (from a flight attendant) that disagreed with the article, I started to think a bit more about the topic. Continue reading Update: Why Do Airplanes Dim Lights?

Stop By A Southwest Porch In These Cities

Southwest

Southwest isn’t known for it’s luxury or lounges, but they do have Porches in three cities around the country.

The Southwest Porch isn’t found at any airports, they are located at public parks in Atlanta, Dallas and New York. The porches sound like a nice place to relax, recharge and chill out if you happen to be in the area. They offer comfortable seating and FUN perks, nestling in a local park.  Continue reading Stop By A Southwest Porch In These Cities

Places That Want You To Kill Exotic Animals

A couple of weeks back I heard about the poaching of the  world’s largest elephant in Kenya and it angered me so much.

Now I don’t consider myself one of those activists like in Greenpeace or Sea Shepherd, but I do believe (to some degree) in their causes.

Some of you may know that my family and I are animal lovers and over the years Kim and I have had many amazing animal experiences, mostly during our travels. I’m not going to mention them again but you can find out my top 5 experiences here. Continue reading Places That Want You To Kill Exotic Animals

Ever Wonder Why Airplanes Dim Lights On Takeoff?

I came across a short article from Travel + Leisure answering a question related to flying that I’ve never really given much thought to before.

On pretty much every flight, the captain dims the cabin light and we are asked to raise our window shades during takeoff and landing. I can’t say that I’ve ever pondered the reason for doing so, it’s always just been something that happens. Continue reading Ever Wonder Why Airplanes Dim Lights On Takeoff?

Buy A Car, Get A Free Trip To Sweden

a man pushing a bag next to a carDuring our trip to the Baltics (Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania) back in 2007, Kim and I flew to Copenhagen first and headed home through Stockholm. We used budget carriers Estonia Air and Air Baltic to get to/ from the Baltics from Scandanavia.

On the way home we had an early flight from Vilnius to Stockholm before making our way back to New York. I was taking a nap on a seat by our gate and when I woke up a guy came over to me and asked if I was Michael W. (This had nothing to do with the blog since it did not exist back then!)

I immediately wondered who this guy was and why he knew my name. It turned out that he was an old friend from junior high and high school that I hadn’t seen in over 10 years! This was definitely an odd but cool coincidence that we both happened to be flying through Stockholm on the same flight. Continue reading Buy A Car, Get A Free Trip To Sweden

World’s Best Countries Seen By Rail

Shinkansen (Bullet Train)- Japan

Last summer Kim, Lucas and I had an amazing time traveling around Japan at a reasonable price due to buying a Rail Pass. While it did seem pricey at first, the speed and efficiency of the rail system allowed us to see lots of different cities around the country in a short period of time. Had we bought each leg seperately, it would have costed way more. Lucas even learned the word train while in Japan!

Other times I’ve used trains to get around include around Belgium, from Paris to Amsterdam, Cairo to Luxor and Toronto to Montreal. (With the massive size of the NYC subway system, I guess this could count too!) While trains can be more comfortable to travel on, over the years, especially around Europe, I’ve always found the inter-city buses to be a cheaper and faster way to get around. Souvenirs That Could Land You In Jail

In recent years we’ve been bringing back less and less souvenirs from our trips. On many of them we don’t even buy a single thing. We do like to get Lucas a little toy during our travels so he has something new and exciting to play with. We also bring back some local snacks on occasion but I’m not really sure if that would be considered a souvenir since they get consumed, eliminating the collectable aspect.

I’m sure most of you know not to bring home meat, fruits, vegetables and cultural artifacts among many other things but what about souvenirs that could really get you into trouble? Continue reading Souvenirs That Could Land You In Jail

Funny Signs You’d Only See In Britain

a sign on a shelf

Many of you may have noticed that I love funny and ridiculous street signs. Randomly coming across one of these signs is like finding a little bonus whether it be during a trip or at home!

Check out some of the signs that I’ve spotted & written about (and a few others that have been contributed by readers) in the tab Ridiculous Street Signs.

On some of my more recent trips, I can’t say that I’ve seen many funny, quality signs. Continue reading Funny Signs You’d Only See In Britain
