I’d Fly To S. Africa Amid Ebola Fears But…

a screenshot of a social media postLast night I came across a couple of interesting tweets from my friend Rene, author of sites such as Delta Points and Delta Mileage Runs.

The first tweet was about a post for a favorable airfare from Toronto to Cape Town, South Africa for $975. Probably a very solid price but not something I’d be interested in. Since I travel with Kim and Lucas, $975 would then become $2,925 for the three of us. Plus, I’d still have to get us from NYC to Toronto. Continue reading I’d Fly To S. Africa Amid Ebola Fears But…

There was recently lots of talk about a viral post about What It’s Like to Fly the $23,000 Singapore Airlines Suites Class. The post was a pretty fascinating read however there was a lot of controversy involving plagiarism and the stealing of other people’s photos.

One such blogger that called out the writer of the viral post was Prior2Boarding blog Andy’s Travel Blog. Check out his review of suites class here and his post thanking the people of Singapore, Reddit and the world for supporting him here.

While I don’t aspire to fly Suite’s Class, it is still pretty interesting to see the discrepancy between coach to suites. (While we’ve flown business and first a bunch of times, we’re typically coach flyers. We fly coach so we can stretch our miles to go on more trips.) Top 10 Oktoberfest’s Around the World

a man holding a childWith Munich’s Oktoberfest ending recently, I was curious to find out about other places around the world that would be worth visiting in the future to see their take on the festival.

I had been actually reading into the best places to go for Oktoberfest around the U.S. initially. Kim and I were hoping to visit an American Oktoberfest this year. However, between the festival dates and not finding decent pricing (with either miles or cash) to get us to one of the cities, it just wasn’t meant to be. How well do you think you know countries around the world?

Maybe you know their history, politics, food and culture. But what if you were given just one picture? Do you think you’d do well then?

When I came across a new quiz from Buzzfeed- How Many Countries Can You Identify From Just One Picture, I didn’t think I had much of a chance. Continue reading Quiz: How Many Countries Can You Identify From A Photo

America’s Oldest Bars

a sign on a buildingBeer and history can both play a big role in determining what we do while we travel and discover a new place.

Many travel for beer to places like Germany and Belgium, while others might visit breweries around the country. I’ve done trips to Germany & Belgium primarily for beer and have also visited loads of breweries around the world.

When visiting a new place, unless you’re spending most of your time at the beach, there is a good chance that you will be visiting lots of historical sites. You might visit old towns, buildings, museums… Continue reading America’s Oldest Bars

Best Airport Food in the World

In recent years, airport food has been greatly improving. Some airports are offering gourmet and high-end food while others have what I like to call higher-end fast food.

We used to always bring lots of snacks and sometimes even a small meal to eat while waiting for our flights to take off, but these days it might be worth checking out what the airport has to offer in terms of tasty, sometimes gourmet food.

(Check out Eater’s Airport Dining Guides to find out the best of what some airports have to offer.) Continue reading Best Airport Food in the World

Who Owns the Overhead Bin Space

With all of the news in the past month about knee defenders and the right to recline, it made me wonder about another sensitive topic- the overhead bin.

I have to admit that Kim and I check our luggage probably on 98% of our flights. For longer trips, especially when you’re traveling with a toddler, fitting all of a family of three’s things into a couple of carry-on bags just isn’t going to happen. Continue reading Who Owns the Overhead Bin Space

Top 10 Coffee Growing Countries + Free Dunkin’ Coffee

a map of the world made of coffee beansFind out at the end of the post how to get free coffee today, September 29!

When it comes to coffee, I’ve never been too interested. I don’t like the smell or taste and for that matter I don’t really care for hot beverages. However, I do find it interesting how beans are grown all over the world, making for a wide variety of flavors.

The Weekly Rehash

The Weekly Rehash

We’re closing in on the end of the month and it’s time for a rehash of the past couple of weeks here at Michael W Travels.

Kim and I got back from Las Vegas after attending BAcon, the BoardingArea Conference. The event was filled with lots of seminars, some of which I hope will help to make improvements to the site. We also enjoyed the social events where I got to catch-up with some friends and also meet some new, like-minded individuals. Continue reading The Weekly Rehash
