10 Hand Gestures To Never Use Abroad

a woman holding her hand up

Hand gestures, much like words can have different meanings in different places. It pays to learn a little about the country you will be visiting to avoid confusion and an honest mistake (which just might piss somebody off)!

In the U.S. we shake our head up/ down for yes and sideways for no. However, in some countries this is not the case. Over the summer we visited a few countries in the Balkans. I don’t recall the exact rules but in Albania & Macedonia a head nod actually signaled the opposite of what we’re used to!

How Long Should You Wait For Customer Service Response: Vote in the Poll

After a ridiculously long wait, the issue that I had with United (in mid-January) was finally resolved.

During our first trip of 2014 to Norway our flight got cancelled due to an approaching winter storm back home, in the NY area.

Read all about what happened in these posts:

10 Crazy Driving Laws Around the World

Driving in foreign countries can definitely be interesting. Knowing the rules- what side of the road to drive on, the speed limit and parking just to name a few can be confusing in itself. Then there are the unwritten rules, when or when not to honk the horn, let other cars cut in etc.

I recently wrote a post about a Huffington Post article-  10 Worst Places To Drive In the World. In the post I wrote about how I’d much rather take public transportation than rent a car when traveling. I followed up a few days later with a Poll: What’s the Worst Place To Drive In the World.

Besides the typical driving laws that you’d expect to figure out, there are also some pretty ridiculous and bizarre ones in various places.

Amazing Aerial Views From Around the World

Kim came across an amazing post on Viralnova a few days back and sent it to me thinking it would be something worth sharing. The post is pretty much a collection of pictures which they found from a Reddit user.

I’m sure that we’ve all looked out the window during a flight and been amazed at what we see down below. I don’t do this too often since I am more of an aisle seat person but I find it interesting to see the different shapes and grid-like patterns on the ground. I also love seeing recognizable landmarks which are easy to notice, like baseball fields!

Viralnova includes 30 amazing birds eye views of 30 different places from all over the world in their post.

Enter The Lottery If You Want To Stay Here

Imagine having to enter a lottery for the chance to pay to stay in a really cool room. Usually you just go online and book the place you’d like to stay. If it is a very popular place or area, you might need to book many months in advance to secure the date you want.

Well, at one temporary London stand alone hotel room, if you want to spend the night you’ll have to enter the lottery and hope to get selected.

15 Bizarre Festivals Only Found In the U.S.

a blue background with white text

Back in December I wrote about 14 Festivals To Attend Before You Die from Fodor’s.

We finally got to attend one of the festivals that made the list (in September), Oktoberfest. We had an amazing time, drank a ton of beer and would definitely love to go again at some point. Fodor’s list included festivals from all around the world including the odd La Tomatina in Spain.

I love visiting strange sites and attractions and enjoyed learning about the weirdest things about each state recently.

A couple of days back I came across a list of fun festivals from Buzzfeed. After looking over the list of 15 Bizarre Festivals Only Found In the U.S., I wasn’t too surprised that I had only heard of a couple of them.

How To Make Flight Attendants Like You

USAToday

USA Today had an interesting article about How To Make Your Flight Attendant Like You a couple of days back.

When I first saw the title I laughed a bit. Is it our job to make the flight attendants like us? After all, we pay our hard-earned money (or miles) to fly!

In my opinion, I don’t think it is “our job” to make the flight attendants like us, but it definitely doesn’t hurt to be nice and make their jobs a bit easier and more pleasant. Flight attendants have a pretty tough job having to cater to a plane full of passengers from all walks of life.

A Kiddie Amenity Kit For $3

a toy package and a game box

At a little over 2 years old, I like to consider Lucas a well-seasoned little traveler. He’s flown over 90,000 miles as a lap baby and has already taken two trips to Europe since turning 2 in early January.

We’ve been very lucky so far. Lucas has been very good on flights. However, he has learned that the crew are generally very friendly (they have apple juice and pretzels!) and  he now asks to take walks, which usually means hanging out in the galley.  So we are always looking for ways to keep him in his seat.

When he is awake, Lucas enjoys watching the in-flight entertainment. We also bring along his iPad mini as well as a small bag of toys (little figurines, wind-up toys, crayons etc.).

I’ve been wanting to get Lucas a few more (small) toys and activities to save just for when we are flying. With three more trips already in the works and more to come, Lucas is bound to get bored with his “airplane” toys.

Regional Foods That Need To Be Everywhere

Jucy Lucy- Matt’s Bar

While traveling around the U.S. (and the world) we love to seek out and try or should I say taste the local eats.

When I think of local foods, here are a few that come to mind- Pizza in New York, Chicago & Connecticut, Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, Lobster Rolls in New England (especially Maine & Connecticut) and Muffulettas & Po’ Boys in New Orleans just to name a few.

During our trip to South Dakota I found a food that is pretty much only known within the state called Chislic which you can read about here. We also tried out Johnny Cakes in Rhode Island. While they aren’t only found in RI, I haven’t seen JCs on a menu anywhere else that I’ve been. Check out my post about them here.

Most Expensive Airport Parking in America

Photo from T+L slideshow

Last month Travel+Leisure had a slideshow featuring the Most Expensive Airport Parking in America.

To help collect the info, T+L turned to BestParking, a website that “tabulates costs at 115 airports throughout North America, steering motorists to the cheapest and closest airport facilities”.

Although we rarely drive to the airport, (if I had to guess) I’d assume that airports in the New York City area, namely JFK and LGA would be at the top of the list. I’d then expect other big cities to follow.
