Heading To The Airport, Next Stop Russia

a map of the world
We’re putting the finishing touches on packing for our upcoming trip to Russia. I’m bringing a larger backpack than I’d like to for a trip of this length. But when you are packing for two and need cold weather items, that’s the best option.

We’ll be flying direct on Delta from New York’s JFK Airport to Moscow’s Sheremetyvo (SVO) Airport. The flight takes off around 5:30 p.m. and is approximately 9.5 hours long.
We always like to arrive at the airport a bit early. We’ll check in, clear security and stop by the Delta Lounge (a nice perk of the Amex Platinum Card) to relax and have a snack before our flight.

Lucas Miles W.
Hopefully Lucas will be his usual awesome self and cooperate on the flight. So far, he has been amazing when flying but this time around he is much more mobile and curious so it might be a bit of a different experience. Kim and I are prepared though (we think!). We have a couple of new books and toys ready for the flight as well as some of Lucas’ favorite snacks. Lucas usually goes to sleep in the 7:30-8:00 range so we are hoping he stays awake for a short while and then passes out for the bulk of our journey.

We’re really excited to be heading to Russia. We can’t wait to explore such an interesting place. I look forward to posting about the trip and our experiences very soon.

Happy holidays to all!

Shake Shack and Other Impressive Food Options Coming to Deltas Terminal 4

Yesterday I mentioned a post that I wrote for Rene over at Delta Points. For those of you that didn’t get a chance to read it there, here it is.
a close-up of a logo

Over the last 2+ years Delta has been renovating and expanding JFK Airport’s Terminal 4. The expansion has a budget of $1.2 billion and will replace Terminal 3 for Delta’s international flights out of the airport.

Many improvements and upgrades are on the way including:

  • Two rows of check- in counters
  • A new, automated baggage handling system
  • Security check points being consolidated into one area which allows for all of the retail and food options to be behind security
  • An additional 9 international gates, giving Delta a total of 16 at JFK
  • Larger waiting areas
  • Additional, new and powered seating for charging your electronic devices
  • The largest Sky Club Delta has to offer

The Sky Club will have 24,000 square feet of space and include the first ever Delta Sky Deck, a 2,000 square foot outdoor terrace. The Sky Deck will offer guests amazing views of Manhattan which I’d definitely love to get a chance to see. The Sky Deck sounds like a great addition for an airport lounge.

Earn American Airlines Miles for Purchasing Bose Products

a blue and white rectangle with a white stripe

A little over a week ago I wrote about earning 1,500 Delta SkyMiles for purchasing Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones.

A few days ago Kim received a letter from Bose with what I believe is a more valuable offer than the previous one I mentioned.

Bose is offering 1,500 American Airlines AAdvantage miles for purchasing a pair of Bose QC 15 headphones. I have the bulk of my miles with AAdvantage and find it much easier to book award flights with AA (at a better price) so I value them much more than SkyMiles.

Another great thing about the Bose American Airlines offer is that you can also earn miles for purchasing a few other Bose products.

Here are the products:

I am not in the market for any of these Bose products, but if you’re thinking of purchasing any of these items you might as well earn some bonus miles for doing so!

To earn AAdvantage miles for purchasing any of the Bose products listed above, Click Here.
***Complete your purchase by December 31, 2012 to earn the bonus miles.

The World’s Longest Flight on a Plane With Two Engines

a screenshot of a flight schedule

I saw this graphic posted on Delta’s Facebook page on November 9. The graphic and info provided definitely caught my attention. Along with the graphic Delta posted:

We’re all about going the distance. At 8,434 miles and more than 16 hours, our direct flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta is the longest flight in the world on a plane with two engines.

I found Delta’s information interesting. Over the summer I had found out that Singapore Airlines operated the longest flight in the world. It goes from Newark- Singapore and takes a little under 19 hours! (For our flight to Singapore we flew from JFK-Cairo, had a short layover and then flew from Cairo- to Singapore.) The flight from Newark to Singapore is going to be cancelled in 2013.

I’ve been on quite a few long flights. I’d guess that my two longest direct flights ever were:

  • Hong Kong to New York (JFK) on Cathay Pacific- around 16 hours flying
  • Dubai to Atlanta on Delta (on the way back to JFK) around 15 1/2 hours flying
What’s the longest direct flight that you’ve ever flown?
