Targeted: Free Southwest Points + 20% Off Code

Southwest

Last year we got great use out of my Southwest Companion Pass, using it to take 5.5 trips. Now its time for us to start making use of Kim’s pass.

After getting a Southwest personal & business credit card (each coming with a 50,000 points sign up bonus), I earned the status after completing an additional $10,000 in spend. What makes the pass an amazing value is that a “companion” flies for free, only paying tax when added to the pass-holder’s reservation. The companion pass essentially makes your points worth double.

With Southwest points being devalued recently, we rushed to make some bookings to try to use up most of Kim’s points. We now have 3 flights booked starting in May and still have more points to burn. The only difference this time is that Lucas needs a ticket. This adds a significant cost to these trips. We’ll actually be traveling for the first time ever without Lucas later in the year.

Win A Trip For 2 To New Orleans From Southwest

Southwest

Southwest Vacations is giving away a vacation package for 2 to New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the U.S.

Last May we spent a few days in New Orleans. I had been there once before but didn’t have time to do a whole lot besides try some beignets and a hurricane. This time around I was able to spend some time wandering around, check out the sites and enjoyed the amazing dining scene around the city.

Southwest Selling Reusable Car Seat/ Stroller Bags

Southwest

We sure could’ve used this for our last flight with Southwest.

During our flight to Dallas, we had to catch another flight through Chicago’s Midway Airport. We picked up Lucas car seat and stroller at the gate and noticed that the car seat was filthy. It was damp and covered in a white, soapy substance.

At first we couldn’t imagine what it was. It seemed to be a bit soapy. We then had an idea of what it could be. Prior to take off from New York, our plane had to be de-iced. Out came the trucks shooting a white foam onto the wings of the plane. Could it be that our car seat had de-icing foam on it?

Free TV Through 2014 On Southwest Thanks To Dish

Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 5.21.27 PM

While flying to Dallas in late December I finally had a chance to watch free DISH TV during our flight on Southwest. To take advantage of the free entertainment onboard you need to use your own device since there are no seatback screens onboard.

I tried out DISH using my, I mean Lucas’ iPad Mini. At first I found it a pain to connect to the service but once I figured it out, it worked pretty well. I felt that there weren’t tons of live TV options to choose from but it was definitely better than nothing and it helped to kill some time. If you can’t find something airing live, you could also search through the on-demand options.

There are around 20 live TV Channels and up to 75 on-demand shows available during flights. (You can also purchase movies for $5 per movie, per device.)

Win A Trip For 2 to the Air Capital of the World

Screen Shot 2014-01-14 at 11.08.29 PM

Southwest Spirit Magazine is giving away a trip for 2 to Wichita, Kansas- The Air Capital of the World.

I was wondering why Wichita was known as The Air Capital of the World so I decided to find out.

According to Go Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau

The population of Wichita nearly doubled in 1918 after a great oil reserve was discovered nearby. In turn, the oil money allowed local entrepreneurs to invest in the up and coming airplane industry. Men like Lloyd Stearman, Walter Beech, and Clyde Cessna brought the industry to the area, and during World War II it was the major manufacturing center for airplanes needed in the war effort. Wichita remains the center for the aircraft industry, the “Air Capital of the World,” producing 70% of U.S. general aviation aircraft.

2014 Amex Platinum Airline Credit Posted: $200 In Southwest Gift Cards

Screen Shot 2014-01-12 at 12.07.10 PM

In 2013 I earned 665,000 miles & points from credit card sign up bonuses.

I started off the year by getting an American Express Platinum card which was offering a 100,000 Membership Rewards points sign up bonus for a limited time. Once I was approved, I confirmed my offer but had to fight with Amex for the points. In the end, Amex did the right thing and I got my 100,000 points.

Along with the bonus points comes a high annual fee of $450. To make the card a good value it also includes lounge access (which is quickly disappearing in 2014) and a yearly $200 Airline Incidentals Fee Credit.

Southwest To Continue Partnership With SeaWorld

Southwest

A few months back I watched the sad and powerful film Blackfish on CNN.

The film focuses mainly on Tilikum, a killer whale that has killed a few people while in captivity at SeaWorld. It also shows the awful, cramped conditions killers whales are forced to live in. Find out more about Blackfish here.

Based on the film, I would probably not go to SeaWorld in the future.

Over $4,500 In Value, How I Used My Southwest Companion Pass

a blue and red airplane with black textAs 2013 came to an end, it also meant the end to my Companion Pass status with Southwest Airlines.

It’s been a fun ride which we will get to continue since Kim now has the status. The big problem is that Lucas will need his own seat in 2014 making the pass a bit less valuable.

I earned the Companion Pass in late 2012 and Kim, Lucas & I enjoyed visiting lots of places around the U.S. thanks to it’s amazing value.

The Companion Pass allows you to designate one person that gets to fly with you just for the cost of tax ($2.50 per segment). When you book a flight with your points, they are essentially worth double if a companion flies with you. This is basically like earning double the amount of points from Southwest.
