Contributor Street Signs #4: Allow Us to Eat You- S.Africa

a sign on a pole

I was happy to receive an e-mail from travel blogger Elena. She wanted to share a photo of a sign which she found to be very funny since she had just came back from a safariHaving been on quite a few safaris (spread out over two trips to Africa), I could definitely see the humor in her sign.

Elena blogs about ways to earn miles and her travels around the U.S. at Giddy For Points which is part of the new travel blog aggregate site First2Board.

After receiving the sign photo from Elena, I sent her some questions.

Here they are:

MW: What country & city was the sign seen in?
Elena: I spotted the sign near Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, South Africa.

MW: When did you spot it?
Elena: We were on the way to dinner, looking for a place to eat.

MW: Where was it?
Elena: The sign was at the entrance to a restaurant.

MW: What was your reaction when you saw the sign?
Elena: When we saw the sign we started giggling which caught the attention of the wait- staff. They tried to cover up the sign but I snapped a pic before they did.

MW: Is there anything else of importance that you would like to add?
Elena: This was my first time out of the county. I was visiting a friend in South Africa that was in the peace corp at the time.

a sign with text on it

Upon further inspection of Elena’s photo, Kim noticed that the “S” was missing. Apparently this restaurant wasn’t looking to eat you, they were really asking to be allowed to seat you.

Look at the difference one letter could make!

Thanks Elena for reaching out and sending in this ridiculous sign!

Contributor Ridiculous Street Signs #3- No Holding Hands- Vienna

a sign on a pole next to a body of water

I recently shared one of my Ridiculous Street Signs posts on travel and frequent flyer site/ community Milepoint. Another member responded to my post by sharing one of his sign photos. I reached out to member M7VO aka Edward M. and asked if he would like to contribute his photo to my collection.

Edward M. was happy to send me his photo and answer a few questions about the time when he spotted it.

a blue and red sign with a red stripe

Here is a little about the photo:

MLW: What country and city was it spotted in?
Edward M: Vienna, Austria- District 22: Donaustadt, coordinates (48.2248, 16.4362)

MLW: When did you spot it?
Edward M: I spotted the sign in October 2012 when I went for a hike along the scenic banks of the Danube River.

MLW: What was your reaction when you saw the sign?
Edward M: At first I was puzzled for a moment, then figured it must be a directive for parents not to bring young children into the protected area. Later in my hike, I saw some unusual- looking birds living and nesting in the area. I realized that the sign was a great idea. The rare birds wouldn’t have adapted to the noise and commotion, if kids and pets were allowed into the habitat.
Just FYI- Vienna is a very kid- friendly city with well equipped playgrounds scattered throughout.

I want to thank Edward M. for sharing his Ridiculous Street Sign photo and letting us know a little about it!

Ridiculous Street Signs #11: Leash Your Dog- Rhode Island

a sign with a person walking a dog

While going through some photos from past trips, I came across this awesome sign.

I don’t have much detail about the photo. What I do know is that it was taken on a trip around New England in the summer of 2011 in Providence, Rhode Island.

I think that it was taken at Roger Williams National Memorial. Kim and I had visited the park to find out about the founder of Rhode Island. I believe that the sign was outside one of the entrances.

I love how the sign doesn’t have any text. I think most would agree that the image on the sign would get it’s message across just about anywhere in the world.

Travel & Leisure: The World’s Funniest Signs

a sign with a finger pointing at a squirrel
Photo from T&L slideshow

I’ve pretty much always been a fan of funny and ridiculous street signs. These signs always seem to catch my eye and I end up stopping for a photo-op.

Check out some of my Ridiculous Street Signs photos at the tab I created HERE.

A few weeks back I started posting Contributor Ridiculous Street Signs photos.
There have been a couple of contributor photos so far:

  1. Elderly People Crossing
  2. Don’t Drive in Water

When Rene sent me his contributed photo of Elderly People Crossing, he was also nice enough to send me a link to a Travel & Leisure slideshow of the World’s Funniest Signs.
The slideshow was from October 2010 and the photos were actually sent in by T&L readers for a Funny Signs photo contest.

There were some really funny signs in the slideshow. One of them was very similar to my second contributed sign. As funny as some of the T&L signs were, I think that some of the photos on my tab are much better!

Here are a few of my favorites from the T&L slideshow:

a speed limit sign in the desert
a sign on a sidewalk near a golf course
a white sign with black text
What did you think of my favorites from Travel & Leisure’s World’s Funniest Signs collection. Check out the full T&L slideshow HERE and let me know which photos you liked best.

Contributor Ridiculous Street Signs #2- Don’t Drive in Water- Italy

LuftFlyer
Last year I was chatting with my friend Dennis, the Lufthansa Flyer about my Ridiculous Street Signs photos and tab. After looking through my photos he told me about a street sign photo of his own that he wanted to share.

When I decided to add reader contributed Ridiculous Street Signs photos, the sign that Dennis had sent me came to mind. I contacted Dennis to see if he would like his sign featured in a post and he was more than happy to answer a few questions about it.

Here is a little info about his photo:

MW: What country & city was the sign spotted in?
Dennis: Isle of Capri, Italy

MW: When did you spot the sign?
Dennis: I spotted the sign when getting off the ferry from Sorrento

MW: Where was it located?
Dennis: On a pier

MW: What was your reaction when you saw it?
Dennis: That there are idiot drivers who need the sign as a reminder

MW: Is there anything else of importance about the sign?
Dennis: Nope

Well there you have it. Thanks Dennis for sending in this Ridiculous Street Sign!
Check out Dennis’ blog Lufthansa Flyer here.

Ridiculous Street Signs #10: Watch For Gate Arm: Philadelphia

Invalid request error occurred.

While walking to the Megabus stop to catch our ride back to NY (from our Quick Trip to Philly), my brother and I walked through a parking lot to save a little time. As we were approaching the exit a sign caught my eye. My brother kept going and probably didn’t even notice that I had stopped for a moment.

I had to think fast. I thought for a moment whether or not this sign was worth taking a photo of.

Ridiculous Street Signs: Elderly People Crossing

a road sign on a pole

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Ridiculous Street Signs photo. I’ve been meaning to do so but it’s just not that easy. You don’t just plan to find and photograph an odd or ridiculous sign- usually you just happen to come across them when you least expect it. That’s at least how it has always worked for me.

I’ve been toying with the idea of posting reader contributed Ridiculous Street Signs photos. I hadn’t thought about it in awhile, but was reminded of the idea a couple of weeks ago when I received an email. The e-mail was from my friend Rene who blogs over at DeltaPoints.

The subject of the e-mail was “a gift for your blog”. I was curious what it could be. The gift ended up being really awesome. It was a Ridiculous Street Sign photo from Rene’s recent trip to Grand Cayman.

Ridiculous Street Signs #9- Beware of Snatch Thief- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

a yellow sign with a person pushing a bottle

While walking back to our hotel after dinner one night in Kuala Lumpur, Kim spotted this really great sign. I was really tired and not paying much attention. Good thing Kim was on the lookout!

When Kim pointed out the sign, it more or less woke me up. I stopped for a couple of minutes to take some photos and had a good laugh about it. I’d guess that most of us would get the point of the sign based on the awesome graphic. Continue reading Ridiculous Street Signs #9- Beware of Snatch Thief- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Ridiculous Street Signs #8- Dog Parking- Munich, Germany

a sign on a concrete wall
While wandering around Munich I came across this sign and could not figure out what it meant.
Usually a sign with a capital P lets you know that you are at a parking garage. The picture of the dog threw me off. Was this a garage to park your dog at?
I went to Google Translate for help and found out that Hunde-Parkplatz means Canine Parking.
Apparently in Germany there are not only parking spaces for your car,  they also provide parking for your dog!

Ridiculous Street Signs #7- No Dog Fouling- Macau

a yellow sign with white text and red text
While visiting Macau I came across a couple of signs that caught my eye. They both involve man’s best friend, the dog.
.
The first sign has a beautiful picture of a person watching their dog pooping (fouling). Along with it was a message of a fixed fine of MOP600 (Macau Patacas, about $75US) for dog fouling. (This was a few years back so I have no clue what the fine currently is for this offense.)
