When traveling around the US, I’m always on the hunt for the best burgers.
In Connecticut, we love dining at Louis’ Lunch, known as being the place where the hamburger was created. A few other gems can be eaten at Holeman & Finch in Atlanta, Workingman’s Friend in Indianapolis and Husk in Charleston.
There are lots of great burgers available in NYC. Two great options are the lunch- only burger at Peter Luger in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Keen’s in Midtown. (FYI- both restaurants have been open since the 1880s.)
NYC is getting another great burger option. The top burger (according to the Daily Meal) in the country is coming to town this week.
Chicago’s Au Cheval will be opening in Tribeca on Tuesday, March 4 at 33 Cortlandt Alley.
Eater mentions that, “the modernized diner is bound to draw lines down the block — in Chicago, it’s one of the toughest restaurants to get into, with diners waiting hours to get their hands on that burger.”
The burger features two 4oz griddled patties with American cheese, dijonnaise and pickles on a toasted bun.
The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Besides their great burger, you can expect other interesting options like a fried house-made bologna sandwich and chilaquiles.
I’ve been wanting to try the burger at Au Cheval for years so I’m really exciting that they’re opening a NYC location. I hope to get there soon and will most likely go early one day to try what might just be the best burger in America!
Have you tried the burger at Au Cheval? If so, let us know what you thought about it.

Island Miler- LOL! We do need to get to Hawaii at some point!
Mak- That could very well be true. There are lots of great burgers out there.
Yes, you do need to get out to Hawaii . Lot’s for adults and kiddos to enjoy too. Hikes, train rides, historic sites, distillery tours, etc.
Best burger in Chicago is not going to be the best burger in New York City.
Island Miler- I don’t believe that Au Cheval makes the claim, they’ve been named at the top for the country on lists…
There are so many great burgers in NYC. Shake Shack is by far my favorite fast- casual burger. Luger is outstanding. If you come to NYC, LMK & maybe we can meet up for a burger. I had the Black Label in 2012. It was rich and delicious (and pricey!). Been meaning to go again and will do so at some point.
Any good burgers in Hawaii?
Ah, duh. READING COMPREHENSION lol.
Definitely! And, likewise, let me know if you come out to Hawaii too.
As far as burgers go, though, my favorite is from a food truck called Chubbies. 100% local beef smash burgers that are reminiscent of Shake Shack but aren’t a carbon copy. There’s a 90-day dry aged burger I’ve gotta try at PAI Honolulu that I’ve heard good things about.
A Chicago diner opening up in NYC claiming the best burger? I’m guessing that’ll go down great with New Yorkers . Only burger I’ve had in NYC is Shake Shack, though I’d love to give Peter Luger a try, especially after your review. Have you ever tried the Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern? That one looks really good too but is just a tad pricier.
