Flying the Inaugural Air China Montreal- Havana, Cuba Flight

Air China

On December 27, 2015, Kim, Lucas and I flew on Air China’s inaugural flight from Montreal, Canada to Havana, Cuba.

This was our first time flying an inaugural flight and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I did assume that some special events might take place at the airport and during the flight.

Here are some details of the festivities that  took place during Air China’s inaugural Montreal- Havana flight (not of our experience flying in business class. I’ll save that for another post possibly…) Continue reading Flying the Inaugural Air China Montreal- Havana, Cuba Flight

Looking Back: The Shit Fountain- Chicago

Shit Fountain

I mentioned in my post about The Doughnut Vault that prior to heading to Chicago I was looking to find some places that seemed a bit more off the beaten path.

When I came across the Shit Fountain I knew that I had found possibly one of the oddest sites.

The fountain is located outside of a private home at 1005 N. Wolcott Avenue. It was created by Chicago artist Jerzy S. Kenar due to being pissed about locals not cleaning up after their dogs.

Trip Planning: We’re Going to Cuba!

Cuba

2015 has been another great year of travel for the Michael W Travels family. We visited lots of new places and had many wonderful experiences.

We’ll be ending the year by visiting a destination I’ve long wanted to visit- Cuba!

I first thought about going to Cuba when I worked at CBS News. The show I worked on, 60 Minutes II had done a segment about Cuba called La Isla De Musica. Seeing footage of the island made me want to get there at some point. Continue reading Trip Planning: We’re Going to Cuba!

Christmas in New Orleans Celebrated Year Round at Santa’s Quarters

Christmas in New Orleans

In May of 2013 we went on a trip to New Orleans. We had a great time and the city quickly became one of our favorites in the United States. We had to shorten the length of our visit due to an invitation to attend a travel blogging conference called BAcon. There is a lot to do in N.O. so I’m sure that we’ll get back there at some point, hopefully sooner than later.

While walking around the French Market District we came across a store that seemed to be just a bit out-of-place.

My Newfound Love for the Window Seat

View From the Window

When I fly, I always prefer to sit in an aisle seat. There are a few reasons why the aisle is my choice.

First of all, I don’t want to bother anybody if I need to get up to go to the restroom or get something out of my bag in the overhead bin. I also like that I can stretch my leg into the aisle, even for a few seconds if the space feels a bit tight. The last reason I like the aisle is so that I can quickly get my bag out of the overhead bin upon landing.

During our flight home from Toronto last month, I rediscovered a reason to love the window seat. Continue reading My Newfound Love for the Window Seat

Photo Tour: LaGuardia Airport’s Marine Air Terminal

Marine Air Terminal

Open House New York Weekend took place on October 17-18 opening the doors to hundreds of places, some of which are not usually open to the  public.

One site which comes to mind that has allowed access for the past few years is the TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport. It was open again this year for the last time before it is turned into a hotel. You can take a photo tour in my post, Step Back in Time: TWA Flight Center which we visited a couple of years back.

Kim, Lucas and I had a very busy day on the first day of OHNY, visiting a bunch of sites in Queens. On Sunday we made a quick stop at a quirky museum in Brooklyn which wasn’t charging admission due to OHNY. Continue reading Photo Tour: LaGuardia Airport’s Marine Air Terminal

See New York “Like A Local”

Like A Local

Even when we’re not traveling, Kim and I like to explore at home. Luckily New York has a ton of things to do.

Whether it be visiting a new park with Lucas, trying out new restaurants, maybe a neighborhood we’re unfamiliar with- we’re always out and about exploring and showing Lucas the variety that New York offers, even a local…

When I received an invite for a food tour of a neighborhood in Brooklyn that I am quite familiar with, I was curious. Would a tour like this be good to recommend to readers? Would I learn something new? Would I know most of the places that the tour stops at? etc… Continue reading See New York “Like A Local”

Ridiculous Street Signs #20: In Oman, For Payphone Fault, Please Call…

OmanDuring our trip to the Mid- East Gulf States I was hoping to come across one or two ridiculous street signs.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve found strange signs harder to come by. They can be found at any time and just about anywhere but you can’t just make them appear or set out to find them.

While visiting the Sultanate of Oman, I came across what I found to be a strange message in an odd place.  Continue reading Ridiculous Street Signs #20: In Oman, For Payphone Fault, Please Call…
