I haven’t been to Mexico City and can’t say that I have the desire to visit any time in the near future but if you do, that’s a pretty nice savings

United Wants You To Follow Them

a screen shot of a screenWhen Twitter first came out, I didn’t really get it. You get 140 characters to compose a Tweet and then what??? Over time I became a believer and big fan.

By picking the right people and companies to follow (in subjects that interest you), Twitter could be a valuable tool. These days, it might just be the app on my phone that I check the most.

Through Twitter I’ve followed many news stories, found interesting article, made various connections and most importantly, used it for customer service related issues.

When it comes to travel and Twitter, I find some companies get it right. American Airlines, Delta and Club Carlson have been quick to respond and help resolve issues which otherwise may have taken much longer to resolve.

The Verdict: Hey United, I Want My $158+ Back

Oslo Map

After quite a few e-mails, posts and a physical letter being sent, my dispute with United has finally come to an end.

Back in January we were on our first trip of the new year in Oslo, Norway. Despite the chilly weather, we had a great time and really enjoyed our visit. Our one complaint was not having enough time to check out more of the country.

Due to an approaching winter storm back at home our flight was cancelled. Rather than head to the airport, I called United through Skype. We got re-ticketed for the following morning without a problem. When I asked who was responsible for our accommodations, I was told (quite rudely) that we were . I got off the phone and quickly booked a hotel and then Kim and I set out some plans for the day. Why not enjoy our extra day in Oslo!

Update 3: Hey United, I Want My $158+ Back

Oslo Map

During our first trip of 2014 to Oslo we got stuck thanks to an approaching winter storm back at home.

Rather than head over to the airport, I called United through Skype and got us rebooked for the following day.  We didn’t mind the extra day in Oslo (we really enjoyed the city), but an extra day meant extra costs.

While rebooking my flight, I had asked the United phone rep who was responsible for our accommodations and she was somewhat rude and matter of fact in telling me that we were.

The following day I found out that 2 other passengers had their hotel stay and meals covered by United! Find out all about it in my post Hey United, I Want My $158+ Back.

Poll Results In: Is It Worth Upgrading to Economy Plus?

Screen Shot 2014-02-09 at 3.20.20 AMA little over a week ago I wrote a post asking Is It Worth Upgrading to Economy Plus.

For me the answer is no if I have to pay for the upgrade. I’d gladly take a free upgrade but to pay for a little more space, I just don’t see the value. I would much prefer to use valuable funds to pay for things during the trip.

However, I can see some cases where paying for E+ can be worth it. If you’re on the taller side then upgrading might be well worth it to get extra space and save your knees from the seat in front of you. I could also see some people finding E+ a decent option for very long flights.

Wideroe Chat To The Rescue

We were supposed to leave on our second trip of 2014 Thursday evening but I got a bit worried when I heard reports of a potential upcoming storm that could either shorten or completely ruin our plans.

Our original itinerary was going to be a 4 night trip so if we left just one day later, it would put the whole trip in jeopardy.

I decided to call United on Monday night and was greeted by a friendly phone rep. I asked if there was a possibility of our flight being cancelled due to the snowy forecast but was assured that Newark is equipped and prepared to deal with snow. I was told that a city like Atlanta was not, so flights from there were being changed. I hung up the phone not feeling any more confident that we would be flying if the snow started falling on Wednesday night. Continue reading Wideroe Chat To The Rescue

Is It Worth Upgrading To Economy Plus

Screen Shot 2014-02-09 at 3.20.20 AM

On Thursday evening we’ll be flying on our second trip of 2014. We’re heading back to Europe on another short trip thanks to the Wideroe mistake fare back in November.

We took a trip to Norway in January and this time we will be flying into Milan. However, we won’t be staying there too long. (More details to follow in a future post.)

The cost for each of us to fly to Milan was a real bargain. The last time we got in on a deal this cheap was when Kim and I flew to Copenhagen for $151.50 (each) round trip. That trip was almost 3 years ago to the day!
