Chicago O’Hare 5K Runway Run- I’m Going!

I’ve already done two 5K runway runs this year and tomorrow my third one is coming up at LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

My brother mentioned the idea of taking a quick trip to Chicago to run in the O’Hare 5K On The Runway about two weeks ago. He saw a post about it on Milepoint (a frequent flier site we are both members of).

Kim and I went to Chicago a few years back and had a great time. We’ve wanted to go back but this will be a quick visit with my brother. (I’ll definitely miss Kim and Lucas while I’m away!)
We leave from New York for Chicago early in the evening on October 18 and head back home in the afternoon on October 20. We’ll have a little over a day and a half in Chicago and plan to make good use of our time!

Trip Planning:
To make this brief trip happen our goal was to keep the trip costs as low as possible. We looked at quite a few options for our flight and hotel. It seemed like we took more time planning the trip than the time we will be away!

The Flight: After going back and forth with a variety of options, we ended up booking our flight with Delta using miles. We each used 25K Delta SkyMiles and paid $5 tax to fly JFK-ORD roundtrip.
The Hotel: The debate was staying at an airport hotel vs. staying downtown. Each option had it’s pros and cons but due to the 5K starting so early on Saturday morning, the airport won. The decision became even easier thanks to the Radisson 1 for 1 promotion– Stay 1 Night, Get 1 Night. We each booked one night at the Radisson Hotel O’Hare which cost $98. (We found a code which brought the price down from the original price of $135) With the 1 for 1 promotion we will each earn a free night at any Radisson Blu or Radisson hotel in the US, Canada or Caribbean.

The Runway Run:
The Chicago Department of Aviation and United Airlines are hosting the O’Hare 5K on the Runway and Community Day.

A little about the runway run (from the race website):

The event will be a one-of-a kind opportunity to experience the runway like few people do and share in a Community Day after the race filled with fun for the whole family, entertainment and food. The course will feature the display of a United Airlines aircraft. The Day s festivities will begin with a brief program to start the race. Following the conclusion of the race, a portion of the course will be open to the community for viewing and photo opportunities in front of the United aircraft.

It’s Park Inn Stay One, Get One Time For Us

This weekend we will be spending two nights at the Park Inn Mechanicsburg, PA.

The main purpose of our visit is to take part in the Park Inn Stay One, Get One promo.

With the promo, Kim and I will each earn 44,000 Club Carlson Gold Points which is good for at least one free hotel night. Award nights start at 9,000 points so there is a chance that we can stretch this offer to get us potentially five free nights each.

To take part in the promo we had to register for it in advance. The promo is good for the first 20,000 people that registered. Once registered, after completing a (minimum) one night stay, you earn 44,000 points. (So for our two night stay at the Park Inn, Kim and I each booked one night.) This offer is now closed out but you can still register to earn 15,000 Club Carlson points here.

There aren’t many Park Inn properties in the U.S. so Mechanicsburg, PA was our only option. It’s not too far, being a little over 3 hours from NY. The area is near Harrisburg, Lancaster and Hershey so there should be enough to keep us busy. I just hope that the weather holds up!

Once we complete our stays this weekend, Kim and I will have close to 300,000 Club Carlson Gold Points thanks to the Radisson Big Night Giveaway, Country Inn Stay One, Get One and this offer.

It should definitely be fun getting to redeem our Gold Points!

Happy Father’s Day & Last Day for Delta Sweepstakes

Father’s Day 2012 is an extra-special one for me- It’s my first time celebrating as a Dad!

To start off the weekend we did one of my favorite things- we spent Friday night at the Radisson in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The main purpose of this little trip was to earn 50,000 Club Carlson points from the Big Night Giveaway promotion.

We’ll be spending Father’s Day with family, which should be very nice.

Lucas Miles W.

My son Lucas Miles W. was born on January 11, 2012. He is a very happy, cute and curious baby. He is always smiling, laughing & looking around and loves to play. He has been a great travel partner so far. Lucas has visited one country (outside the US) and 3 U.S. states. We look forward to our upcoming trip to South Dakota in a couple of weeks from now and hope to visit Europe at the end of August.

Here are a few offers and promotions worth considering/ registering for:

Register for United MileagePlus Mobile Offers and get 500 bonus award miles. Register your Visa card and receive special offers by text message.
Purchase US Airways Dividend Miles and receive a 100% bonus. This offer is good for up to 50,000 miles which costs $1750 ( about $.0175 cents per mile). Not a horrible price especially if you need some miles to top off an account.
Register for Starwood Preferred Guest Nice Choice by June 30, 2012. The promotion allows you to choose what, when and how you earn. There are some pretty “nice” options.
Register by June 30 for the Marriott Rewards Summer Bonus and earn up to three free nights. Stay at participating Marriott Hotels worldwide between June 1- August 31 and earn one free night after every second paid stay.

Club Carlson Promos:

You can still register for the Radisson Big Night Giveaway and earn 50,000 Gold Points after completing one qualifying stay by July 15. You can earn one bonus per account. I did one stay last weekend and my bonus was posted in 4 days. We’ll be doing another stay in two weeks from now in Kim’s name which will get us another 50K bonus.
There are still spots left to register for the Park Inn Stay One, Get One promotion. Like the Radisson Big Night, you can earn 44,000 Gold Points after completing one qualifying stay by July 22, 2012. There are only 10 Park Inns in the US which makes this promo a bit harder to complete. Kim and I are staying at a Park Inn in Pennsylvania in mid-July. We each booked one night so that will give us 88K in bonus points.
The Country Inn & Suites Stay One, Get One Event reached it’s limit for the 44,000 Gold Points bonus. You can still register for the SOGO Event and earn 15,000 bonus points by completing a stay by July 15.

You can also currently save 30% off at select Club Carlson properties. Use code 30PCTOFF to get the discount. I could not find any properties that qualified for this offer near us. This offer is good now until June 12 & June 22 through September 1.
