My Amex Platinum Card Retention Offer

a close-up of a credit cardLast January I got approved for a short-lived American Express Platinum Card 100,000 Membership Rewards points sign up offer through creditcards.com. After completing the minimum spend, I had to fight to get my points from Amex.

With a hefty $450 annual fee due in the middle of this month I have a big decisions to make: Do I pay the fee for the year or do I cancel the card?

While I’d love to just cancel the card, I have a major obstacle in the way. What do I do with my Membership Rewards points.

I was hoping to come across a decent transfer bonus offer to make my decision easy but nothing exciting came up over the past couple of months.

I decided to give American Express Platinum customer service a call to see if they could help me out with the annual fee.

2014 Amex Platinum Airline Credit Posted: $200 In Southwest Gift Cards

In 2013 I earned 665,000 miles & points from credit card sign up bonuses.

I started off the year by getting an American Express Platinum card which was offering a 100,000 Membership Rewards points sign up bonus for a limited time. Once I was approved, I confirmed my offer but had to fight with Amex for the points. In the end, Amex did the right thing and I got my 100,000 points.

Along with the bonus points comes a high annual fee of $450. To make the card a good value it also includes lounge access (which is quickly disappearing in 2014) and a yearly $200 Airline Incidentals Fee Credit.

My Citi AA Retention Offer: $10 Profit + Up To 16,000 Bonus Miles

New AADisclosure: I receive a commission if you apply & get approved for the credit card mentioned in this post. Thank you for supporting Michael W Travels.

Last week I posted about miles & points earned from credit card sign up bonuses in 2013. While it was a very productive year, I did quite a bit better in 2012.

Over the past couple of years I’ve gotten approved for 5 Citi American Airlines credit cards, earning me 240,000 AAdvantage miles from sign up bonuses.

One of my Citi AA cards from 2012 came up for a fee this month ($85 for the year). I decided to call in and try to get a retention bonus. I was curious to  see if Citi would tempt me with a fair offer to keep this card.

I’m willing to bet that we all want to earn lots of points and do so really fast.

Over the last year or so the quickest way (besides sign up bonuses) to earn point has been manufactured spend with the purchase of gift cards. Some of our favorite flavors for this have been Vanilla. If you could find these tasty cards, earning easy points comes at a small price- $3.95 per $500 load on a card. If you used the appropriate card at the right stores, you might get a bonus of 5X points. When I started doing this, I was earning 6X points with my Hilton Amex card at drug stores. (This bonus option went away a few months ago.)
.

Over the past few months some of us have noticed that it’s been getting harder to find Vanilla Reloads and/or find stores willing to accept credit cards for the purchase. In the New York City area it seems to be practically impossible. On a few recent trips around the country I had no problem buying Vanilla Reloads with a credit card in New Orleans, Milwaukee and Minnesota.

Besides Vanilla Reloads, there is another way to earn valuable points but it comes in a much slower way. For example- if I know that I will be shopping on Amazon, I buy gift cards for no fee at Staples. I use my Chase Ink card, earning 5X points on purchases that might otherwise not reward me with much more than the 1 point per $.
Another great way to earn points and save money is by purchasing gas station gift cardsContinue reading Save An Additional .20₵ At The Pump + Earn 5X Points

Amex Does The Right Thing- I Got My 100,000 Points

a close-up of a credit card

Back in January there was an amazing offer for the American Express Platinum Card through CreditCards.com. By going through the “Offers Matched For You” option (on the top left of the site), a 100,000 Membership Rewards Points sign up bonus would be offered. This offer disappeared by the following morning.

I went ahead and applied for the card and was instantly approved. The card arrived a couple of days later. I activated the card by calling the number on the back of the card not the activation number on the front sticker. I was told about various perks the card offered as well as the bonus I would receive after hitting the required spend.

Before activating a new credit card I always call in to reconfirm my signup bonus.

The Amex Platinum became my go-to card. I was looking to hit the spend relatively fast so I started using it for pretty much everything. I had a few more questions about some of the card benefits so I called up again about a week later. I spoke to a friendly representative and was explained everything I asked. I inquired about my sign up bonus again and was told that after spending $3,000 I would receive 100,000 points.

A Reminder From United: Book Flights With Your Explorer Card

a blue luggage on a green surface

United sent out a friendly and useful postcard reminder in the mail:

To save on checked bags, always purchase your tickets with your MileagePlus Explorer Card.

I thought the information on the postcard could be a useful reminder for many and could also save you some money when flying with United.

A nice benefit you receive for paying for a flight with your Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Card is getting your first checked bag free as well as one for a companion traveling on the same reservation. You can save up to $100 for each round trip.

For our trip to South Dakota we booked an award flight from NYC using Kim’s United miles. Kim paid the taxes, $20 total with one of her cards.
We made the mistake of not using my United Explorer Card. We figured since Kim’s miles were being used, one of her cards should be used to pay the taxes. I also thought that since I was flying on the itinerary and had my Explorer card linked to my account, our checked luggage would be free.

Boy was I wrong!

When we got to the check-in counter, we were told each checked bag would be $25. I mentioned that I had the United Explorer card and was immediately told the rules. You must pay for your flight using the card to get the free checked bag benefit. This meant that our free award flight + tax was now going to cost us an additional $50 each. Not cool!

I quickly came up with a plan. I’d pay for our baggage fees with my Chase Ritz Carlton card. The card came with a very useful benefit, a $200 annual credit meant to be used for checked bags or other incidental airline fees. This softened the blow.

The lesson to be learned here is be sure to fully understand the benefits of your credit cards. It can definitely save you some money.

Had I realized that I needed to use my Explorer card to qualify for free checked luggage, I could have saved my $100 Ritz Carlton benefit for something else!

Thank you United for the reminder.

Citi AAdvantage- 10% Awards Booking Rebate Posts Immediately

a red blue and white logo

Last year Citi and American Airlines added some interesting perks for credit card holders.

There was one thing that really stood out: Earn Miles for Using Miles:
Earn 10% of your redeemed AAdvantage miles back- up to 10,000 AAdvantage miles each calendar year.

This sounded like an amazing offer. How could you go wrong with getting back miles for using them! The only negative to the offer was that the mileage rebate was capped. To make this a true 10% back offer, I’d like to try to not redeem more than 100,000 AAdvantage miles in any given year. By doing so I could earn the full rebate.

I was looking to set up my travel plans for most of 2013 early this year so I had an idea. If I could get an AA award booking done before 2012 was over, maybe I could earn the 10% rebate for 2012 and 2013 (if I decided to book another flight with AAdvantage miles).

Prior to booking an awards flight on AA, I called up the AAdvantage Gold phone line. I asked for information about how the credit card mileage rebate worked. The customer service rep wasn’t so sure about this offer. However, he did guess that I would be credited back my 10% after I took the actual flight, not at the time of booking the flight.

The rep’s answer made sense. What a bummer! I was hoping that I could book a flight, earn my miles refund immediately and still qualify for this same offer in 2013.

Sorry for the blurry image

Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I was checking my AAdvantage account balance online. While checking recent activity I noticed a couple of thing:

    1. Mileage for the AA flight that I booked for the end of June had been deducted from my account on 12/20/12. The miles were deducted in two 50,000 mile increments.
    2. I earned 10,000 miles for the Citi 10% Awards Bonus, also credited on 12/20/12.

This was amazing news! Now if I decide to book another AA award flight in 2013 I will still be eligible for the 10% mileage refund (up to 10,000 miles in a calendar year).

Reminder to Register Your Cards For Dining & Shopping Portals

a hand holding a credit card
I’ve been meaning to write a post regarding earning extra miles and points for doing things that we do on a regular basis- Shopping & Dining.

I went online to update my AAdvantage Dining Program account. When I logged in, I saw the image above. This got me thinking- It’s time to write that post!

We are now well into 2012 and I’m sure that many of us have received lots of great, new credit cards. The main chunk of miles and points come from signup bonuses but let’s remember that every mile counts! Take a few minutes to go through you wallet and double check that all of your new cards are registered in airline, hotel and credit card Shopping & Dining portals. Just about everybody has one.

Also- if you have any airline and hotel accounts with expiring miles, an easy way to extend the date is by earning miles by shopping and dining.
