Win A Travel Writing Scholarship to SE Asia

If you’ve ever dreamed of being a published travel writer, then this contest is for you!


World Nomads is sponsoring a travel scholarship contest. The winner will be mentored in three countries in South East Asia- Singapore, Bali (Indonesia) and Malaysia.
The mentors will be from Rough Guides (Singapore), Travelfish (Bali) and hsa*ba (Malaysia)

A little about the contest:
  • Contest open to students, non-professional writers and lovers of travel looking for a career change (They consider you a professional travel writer if you’ve been published regularly in newspapers, travel magazines or travel journals. We would also consider you to be a professional travel writer if you derive more than 25% of your income from travel writing)
  • If you’ve had a few stories published or have a travel blog, you are not considered a professional
  • Submission Deadline: April 23, 2012
  • Must be able to write well in English
  • Must be comfortable doing some travel on your own
  • Be 18 years or older by submission deadline
  • Have a current passport valid for at least six months
  • Winner must be available to travel on assignment June 18- July 6

 To Apply:
1-Write a 2,000 character or less (spaces included) travel essay based on a personal experience about one of these themes:
  • ‘Understanding a Culture through Food
  •  ‘A Local Encounter that Changed my Life’ 
  •  ‘Seeing the World through Others Eyes’
  •  ‘Giving Back on the Road’
2- Complete the entry form with contact details and a max. 800 character essay about why you should be chosen and what this opportunity means to you.
3-One entry per person
4-Entry must be submitted in English

AAdvantage Tips Tab on Facebook & Win 5,000 AA Miles

American Airlines AAdvantage has added a new feature to it’s Facebook page.
They added a Tips Tab where members can share their AAdvantage advice.

Some tips added so far:

  • “You can put an award ticket on hold for free, for up to 5 days… if you’re indecisive like me “
  • “Just registered the husband’s credit card for the Dining program. He takes clients to dinner, and I get the miles!”
  • “Mom turned 80, so I surprised her with her favorite, lilies. Performed an elusive double dip- used FTD (ftd.com/aadv) AND put it on my credit card to earn miles from both!”
  • “Just stumbled upon aa.com/hotspots- now I know where I can go with fewer miles!”

Some of these tips can be useful but the best part of this new tips tab is the contest:an put an award  
By submitting a tip you will be entered for a chance to win 5,000 AAdvantage miles. 
  • Contest ends May 1
  • Open to legal residents of 50 US States, DC and Puerto Rico
  • Must be 18 or older at time of entry
  • Around 5/23 they will pick their 10 favorite tips to win.
  • 10 prizes of 5,000 AAdvantage miles (approximate value $99.50)

    I posted a bit about the Milepoint Kiva Lending Team the other day.

    I think Kiva is a really interesting and great non-profit. Their efforts are helping people all over the world become successful due to the generosity of it’s members.
    Once you make a loan, you will see progress updates from Kiva through your 
    e-mail. As the borrower repays the loan, the money becomes available in your account. You can then fund another loan, donate it to Kiva or withdraw it for something else. There is a 98.87 repayment rate for ended loans.

    I joined the Milepoint Kiva Lending Team recently. Milepoint has been deeply involved in Kiva and has made a huge impact with it’s efforts.
