Our Final Trip of 2013

Screen Shot 2013-12-20 at 1.30.42 AMAfter going away for Thanksgiving, I thought that we were done with our travels for 2013. However I just couldn’t resist, so I booked us one last short trip. We’ll be leaving this afternoon.

We were originally thinking of a couple of options, one being El Salvador and the other being a week in Texas to visit Dallas and Austin. However, I wasn’t off during the full winter break so we settled on visiting just one city in Texas: Dallas.

We’ll be visiting Dallas for the first time and have lots of ideas for things to do. It will finally be  nice to get out of the airport and experience a little bit of Texas firsthand. If the flight times weren’t an issue we probably would’ve picked Austin for this trip but based on what I’ve read so far, there seems to be some great things to see and experience in Dallas.

AirTran To Fully Integrate Into Southwest in 2014

Southwest

Soutwest and AirTran should be fully integrated by the end of 2014 according to an e-mail by the airline.

Domestic AirTran flights can currently be booked through Southwest which is a nice option. Over Thanksgiving we used Rapid Rewards points to fly AirTran to Florida and flew one leg on each airline for the way home. It would be nice to have the option to book international travel to the Caribbean with the Companion Pass. However, I’m guessing it would probably take a boatload of points to do so.

When the airlines become fully integrated, Rapid Rewards will become the loyalty program of the combined airline. According to Southwest: We will continue to share information about the integration as it is available. Thank you for your loyalty, and we look forward to seeing you onboard soon.

Our Upcoming Thanksgiving Plans

Screen Shot 2013-11-27 at 1.44.29 AM

Last year, we had a not so typical Thanksgiving. Kim and I started out early by running in a 5 mile “Turkey Trot” in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. For dinner rather than stick to traditional holiday food we had Turkish food for turkey day!

This year we’ll be taking a little trip for Thanksgiving. We’re not heading anywhere glamorous or too exciting but we’ll be squeezing in an extra trip this year regardless.

Only On Southwest: Gate To Gate Wifi

Screen Shot 2013-11-21 at 6.50.46 AMNo More Powering Down– Southwest Airlines became the only airline to offer gate to gate wifi on most of it’s fleet.

You can now use small portable electronic devices (smartphones, tablets & e-readers) in airplane mode during your full day of flying.

Southwest’s satellite-based Wifi costs $8 a day per device which gives you uninterrupted access to free live and on-demand TV compliments of DISH, even during stops and connections.

Flashback Friday: Our First Time Flying Southwest Airlines- I’m Impressed

FlashbackFriLast week’s Flashback post was related to Southwest Airlines so I figured it was best to follow up with one about our first time flying with them.

Many people would rather not step foot on Southwest but Kim and I feel quite differently about the airline. We find them to be a bit quirky and different in the way that things are done… and we like that!

Since writing about our first trip on Southwest, we’ve flown with them 3-4 more times. We’ve had positive experiences and find them to be a great option for domestic flights.

Flashback Friday: The Oddest Checked Luggage I’ve Ever Seen

FlashbackFriA couple of weeks back I posted about a museum featuring medical oddities and this week I want to share a different kind of odd post from the past for Flashback Friday.

I can’t recall seeing anything odd ever get checked at the airport up til our trip to Louisville and Nashville last December. At the counter next to ours, a man was trying to check two 50 pound dumbbells!

Win A Trip to Florida From Southwest Airlines

Screen Shot 2013-10-09 at 7.18.31 AMI recently saw this giveaway mentioned in the Southwest Spirit Magazine e-mail.

Southwest is giving away a trip for 2 to St Pete Beach, Florida.

While I’m not really a fan of laying out on the beach, an experience included in the prize sounds really awesome. Along with air and hotel (and other extras) a JetLev flying jetpack experience comes with the prize package. The JetLev jetpack allows you to “soar up to 30 feet in the air or hover and walk along the water”.

Checking Out Southwest’s "Specialty Planes" Fleet

a blue and red airplane with black text
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Southwest Airlines. I like how they are a bit different than other airlines- no pre-assigned seats, no baggage fees, snacks served on most flights and a very friendly staff. They also offer first time flyer certificates to kids at times which is a nice little perk.
.
While reading online last month I came across a link for some Southwest planes which have very interesting paint jobs.

The link was for a page called Specialty Planes.
