Off Topic: My Little Burger

Yesterday was the Jewish holiday of Purim. The easiest way to describe the holiday is to compare it to Halloween. During Purim, people get dressed up in costumes and candy/ snacks are given out. I’m not the best person to have explain the holiday so I’ll stop there.

For Purim we dressed up Lucas as one of my favorite foods, a Hamburger!
We had bought the costume for Halloween but with the destruction done by Hurricane Sandy, it wasn’t the year to take him out trick or treating. Candy is also not part of Lucas’ diet yet. Continue reading Off Topic: My Little Burger

Mission Completed- I Ran Up the Empire State Building!

Nice views from the Observation Deck

In late December I signed up for an odd running event- the Empire State Building Run- Up.

Last night I headed into Manhattan to torture myself a little by running up the Empire State Building. I ran up 86 Floors which is 1,576 steps. Runners are released in waves so by the time I got started it was almost 9:30 PM.

There were over 700 runners registered for the event, the largest field ever. The race was well organized which is impressive due to the logistics involved. The run ended at the Observation Deck which was closed to the public for the race.

The beginning waves were open to invited runners. The first two were for runners competing to get to the top first. Wave 1 was for top women runners (about 7), Wave 2 was for top men runners (also 7). Wave 4 was for news and media. A friend had mentioned to me that Kelly Ripa was running. She was the biggest name there from what I could tell. After all of the media left the staging area Kelly was announced and she ran out to loud cheers. I tried to take a photo of her but the iPhone camera was way too slow so all I got was the blurry image above.

The Starting Line

While waiting around for my wave to run, I had plenty of time to think about what I had gotten myself into. I had trained on a stairmaster but I knew it was not at all like the real thing.

Running up the stairs in the Empire State Building was a painful and grueling task. It was extremely hot with little fresh air to be had. My legs started feeling a bit heavy before I got to the 20th floor, the first water stop. To keep motivated, I had my mind on the next stop on  the 65th floor. From there it was only 20 more floors to the top. It is much harder to breathe properly while running up stairs opposed to when I am running at the park. However, once I got to the top I actually felt pretty good. I was very tired and sweaty but my legs felt great. The only bother I had was a little pain in my lower back- probably more from sitting on the floor when working with my students at times.

All runners that completed the run got this nice, shiny medal. I proudly wore it while admiring the views from the Observation Deck. It was freezing up there and very windy but I braved the cold and took a few photos. (The photos were not so good since I was using my iPhone.)

All registered runners also received a couple of goodies. We were given a draw-string bag and a very nice long sleeve wicking T-shirt.

Overall, I am really glad that I participated in the event. I am looking forward to finding out how long it took me to finish later today.

I can’t say that I have the desire to run up the Empire State Building again, but then again you never know!

A Shirt That "Fits" Me

a grey shirt with a bike on it

While shopping on Black Friday, a shirt that I had seen in the past had caught Kim’s eye. The shirt had a great message that I definitely agreed with- Eat Well, Travel Often.
The shirt was spotted at one of our favorite stores- Brooklyn Industries.

When I had seen this shirt in the past, I didn’t get to see the full message. I guess the way it was folded only allowed me to see part of it. I could see the words Eat Well and the pizza bike graphic but not the last line. Pizza is probably tied for my favorite food so I did look at the shirt but I never bothered to unfold it.

While trying on a shirt at BKI, Kim came over with the Eat Well shirt and told me that she found the perfect shirt for me. At first I was wondering what I missed but when I saw it fully opened I had to get it.

The message on the shirt- Eat Well, Travel Often was really fitting. At home and while traveling, Kim and I love trying out new restaurants, seeking out interesting foods and eating well. We also make sure to travel often. It is rare that we don’t have an upcoming trip planned or in the works.

I’m definitely not the only that liked this shirt. I checked the BKI website and it’s only available in size XL (and on sale for $19.99). If you need a different size, maybe you’ll have better luck in one of the BKI stores.

Check out Brooklyn Industries HERE to purchase the Eat Well shirt and see what other products they have to offer.

Off Topic: A Not So Typical Thanksgiving

This past Thanksgiving was definitely unique and different for a few reasons.

The #1 way it was different was that this was my first Thanksgiving as a Dad.
All experiences these days seem to be different (new or old) and better with Lucas around.
I am very thankful to have my amazing little boy in my life!

Kim and I started off Thanksgiving 2012 by running in the Prospect Park Track Club’s 5 Mile Turkey Trot. This was the longest run for both of us. It was a nice challenge and accomplishment to complete. We both were really happy with how we did and are now talking about trying to run a 10K (6.2 miles) in the future.

The race sold out with 2,500 registered participants. We were lucky to have beautiful weather in New York on Thanksgiving. We both felt great (and exhausted) after finishing the race.
Some relaxation was needed when we got home before eating our Thanksgiving dinner…
