KLM Cargo has been flying “Dutch Master” Johannes Vermeer’s painting “Women In Blue Reading A Letter” from it’s home in Amsterdam (at the Rijksmuseum) to Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Los Angeles.

If you haven’t had a chance to see it while traveling around the world, KLM wants to give you a chance to see it at it’s home in Amsterdam.

The sweepstakes is being ran through Facebook. 

To enter, you have to fill out a form on FB and then answer a question in 140 characters or less: What do you think is on the letter that the “Women In Blue” is reading?

The Prize:

  • Two KLM round trip economy class tickets (May depart from NY-JFK, D.C.- IAD, Atlanta- ATL, Houston- IAH, Chicago- ORD, L.A.- LAX, S.F.- SFO or Dallas- DFW
  • Prize must be taken from May 1, 2013- May 1, 2014
  • Tickets must be pre-booked at least one month in advance

Learn about KLM’s Green Initiatives and Win 2 Tickets to Amsterdam

KLM wants to show how aware they are of the airline industry’s impact on the environment by giving a virtual tour of how “Blue Flies Green”. The tour is done on Facebook. 
They are also giving away two round trip tickets on KLM to Amsterdam for showing your support of their eco-friendly initiatives. 

Some of the steps KLM have taken are:

  • A new aircraft painting system which uses thinner layers to reduce paint weight by 15%
  • Only use recycled water to clean planes and engines are washed regularly for more fuel efficiency
  • Source food from eco-friendly resources whenever possible which contributes to conservation efforts and helps offset climate changes
  • Focusing more on electronic communications to reach a goal of paperless cockpits
  • Meal service equipment has been lightened up for more fuel efficiency
  • Has experimented flying with biofuels including a flight from Amsterdam to Rio.This was the longest distance any aircraft has flown on biofuels.


The Prize:

  • Two KLM round- trip economy class tickets to Amsterdam. Winner may depart from the following US gateways: New York (JFK), Wash D.C. (IAD), Atlanta (ATL), Houston (IAH), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO)

KLM is running a contest through Facebook called the Holland Classics.
The prize is a very nice trip to Amsterdam!

Prize includes:

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport Evacuated After Bomb Threat

The main terminals at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport (AMS) were evacuated on Monday following a bomb threat.
A man called the military police saying he was in the airport and had a bomb.
Military police patrolled the airport, a bomb squad was present and hundreds of people had to wait outside.
At least a dozen flights were delayed.

KLM- Connect with Meet & Seat

Here is another interesting way to put social networking to use for travel.

KLM has started a new program called Meet & Seat.
It allows you to see who’s on board your flight and get in touch with other passengers by connecting your Facebook and/ or LinkedIn account to your KLM booking profile.

KLM says you can meet other interesting travelers and increase networking opportunities- “Choose for yourself whether you want to meet for a coffee before the flight, select adjoining seats or share a cab to the conference you are both attending”. It sounds to me like it could become another form of internet dating or hook-up opportunities!

Meet & Seat is available for:
  • Bookings with 1 passenger
  • KLM flights between Amsterdam and New York, San Francisco  and Sao Paulo
  • From 90 days until 48 hours before departure
  • Will be available on more KLM flights soon
