a close-up of a certificate

Happy 4th of July from Japan! Kim, Lucas and I spent the day exploring the first capital of Japan- Nara. While we didn’t get to attend any barbecues for July 4, I did get to have a tasty burger on the way back to Kyoto.

A little over a week ago I announced a giveaway of 2 American Airlines Admirals Club passes. The contest has now come to a close and it’s time to announce the winner!

A couple of ways to enter were by following me on FacebookGoogle+ and Twitter. I want to thank everyone that signed up. (Thanks to everyone following me prior to the contest too!)

Another way to gain entries was by leaving a comment answering the question:
What airport do you plan to visit an Admirals Club at if you win this prize?

There were a good amount of entries this way and I want to share which airports got the most responses.

The city/ airport with the most mentions were:
  1. Dallas (DFW)
  2. New York (JFK)
  3. Los Angeles (LAX)

And now for the winner…
I want to congratulate David P. for winning 2 Admirals Club lounge passes! David left a comment that he would like to use the passes for a long layover at JFK.

Thanks to everyone that entered. Make sure to keep checking back each day.
Another giveaway should be coming up in the near future!

Giveaway: Win 2 American Airlines Admirals Club Passes

a close-up of a certificate

Citi & American Airlines were kind enough to send me a pair of lounge passes as part of the offer for opening an AA credit card earlier in the year.

I currently have no use for the passes since we are flying business class to Japan and first  class home. When you fly a premium class, lounge access is usually included. I also have an American Express Platinum card which allows me to visit AA Admirals Clubs when flying on the airline.

Since these passes won’t do me any good, I’ll be giving them away!
One lucky winner will receive:

  • Two (2)- American Airlines Admirals Club lounge passes
a card on a green surface

Rules for each Admirals Club pass:

  • Pass is valid- one day for one person
  • Valid only at AA Admirals Club lounges
  • Pass holder must be at least 18 years of age
  • Expires December 31, 2013
Giveaway ends July 4 at 12:00 AM
Prize will only be mailed to U.S. addresses
I will send out the prize after returning home from Japan (after July 7)

There are multiple ways to enter the contest.

How I Upgraded To First Class for 7500 Miles

a close-up of a logoYesterday I shared some details about our upcoming trip to Japan. I mentioned that we were flying from NYC to Japan on American Airlines. We booked using some of our miles.

However, I didn’t mention how many miles it cost us because it’s a bit of a long story.

Our flight was originally booked back in December. The flight from JFK- Tokyo in business class cost us 100,000 AAdvantage miles per person. We each received a Citi 10% award redemption bonus for having Citi AA credit cards. This came out to 10,000 miles being returned to each of us so now our flight was costing only 90,000 miles.

In February I called the AAdvantage Awards Desk looking for a flight with a later return date. If seats were available we would have two extra days in Japan. After some searching I was told that seats were available for the date I had requested in First Class for 7,500 miles more than the business class seats.

Citi AAdvantage- 10% Awards Booking Rebate Posts Immediately

a red blue and white logo

Last year Citi and American Airlines added some interesting perks for credit card holders.

There was one thing that really stood out: Earn Miles for Using Miles:
Earn 10% of your redeemed AAdvantage miles back- up to 10,000 AAdvantage miles each calendar year.

This sounded like an amazing offer. How could you go wrong with getting back miles for using them! The only negative to the offer was that the mileage rebate was capped. To make this a true 10% back offer, I’d like to try to not redeem more than 100,000 AAdvantage miles in any given year. By doing so I could earn the full rebate.

I was looking to set up my travel plans for most of 2013 early this year so I had an idea. If I could get an AA award booking done before 2012 was over, maybe I could earn the 10% rebate for 2012 and 2013 (if I decided to book another flight with AAdvantage miles).

Prior to booking an awards flight on AA, I called up the AAdvantage Gold phone line. I asked for information about how the credit card mileage rebate worked. The customer service rep wasn’t so sure about this offer. However, he did guess that I would be credited back my 10% after I took the actual flight, not at the time of booking the flight.

The rep’s answer made sense. What a bummer! I was hoping that I could book a flight, earn my miles refund immediately and still qualify for this same offer in 2013.

Sorry for the blurry image

Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I was checking my AAdvantage account balance online. While checking recent activity I noticed a couple of thing:

    1. Mileage for the AA flight that I booked for the end of June had been deducted from my account on 12/20/12. The miles were deducted in two 50,000 mile increments.
    2. I earned 10,000 miles for the Citi 10% Awards Bonus, also credited on 12/20/12.

This was amazing news! Now if I decide to book another AA award flight in 2013 I will still be eligible for the 10% mileage refund (up to 10,000 miles in a calendar year).

Earn American Airlines Miles for Purchasing Bose Products

a blue and white rectangle with a white stripe

A little over a week ago I wrote about earning 1,500 Delta SkyMiles for purchasing Bose QuietComfort 15 headphones.

A few days ago Kim received a letter from Bose with what I believe is a more valuable offer than the previous one I mentioned.

Bose is offering 1,500 American Airlines AAdvantage miles for purchasing a pair of Bose QC 15 headphones. I have the bulk of my miles with AAdvantage and find it much easier to book award flights with AA (at a better price) so I value them much more than SkyMiles.

Another great thing about the Bose American Airlines offer is that you can also earn miles for purchasing a few other Bose products.

        Here are the products:

I am not in the market for any of these Bose products, but if you’re thinking of purchasing any of these items you might as well earn some bonus miles for doing so!

To earn AAdvantage miles for purchasing any of the Bose products listed above, Click Here.
***Complete your purchase by December 31, 2012 to earn the bonus miles.

        American Airlines Is "Evolving"

a logo of a airline company

While skimming through Facebook I came across this informative infographic filled with lots of details related to how “American Is Evolving”.

We are undergoing a transformation as we build towards the youngest fleet in five years among the five largest U.S. airlines. Check back often to follow our progress in bringing you a fresh, modern travel experience.

         Here is the infographic:

a poster for a hotel room

I’m pretty excited to see all of these changes coming to American. I have a ton of miles with AA so why not use them on a better, updated product! I rarely fly anything but coach so I don’t know if I will ever get to experience the fully lie flat seats but I am happy to hear about all of those new planes coming. It is also pretty amazing that 97% of the continental U.S. fleet will be wifi enabled by 2013.

If the infographic is a bit hard to read you can check it out on the American Airlines site HERE.
