While a typical island vacation isn’t the most appealing kind of travel to me, there are many that definitely offer lots of things to do.
Some of my favorite trips have actually been to islands but they’re probably not ones that you’d typically think of.
When I think of some awesome island vacations that I’ve taken, Easter Island, San Blas (Panama) and Malta come to mind… No, they’re probably not the relaxing, beachy destinations that you probably thought I’d bring up.
So why all of the island talk?
I came across an article from Trip Advisor which lists the Top 10 Islands of 2015.
The list is part of their Traveler’s Choice which is “chosen by millions of travelers“.
Here are the Top 10:
- Providenciales- Turks & Caicos
- Maui- United States
- Roatan- Honduras
- Santorini- Greece
- Ko Tao- Thailand
- Madeira- Portugal
- Bali- Indonesia
- Mauritius
- Bora Bora- French Polynesia
- Fernando de Noronha- Brazil
I wasn’t so surprised to see that I’ve only been to one of the destinations that made the list- Bali, Indonesia. Kim and I have also visited French Polynesia but didn’t make it to Bora Bora.
If I could pick a couple of these islands to visit, my top choices would probably be Mauritius and Fernando de Noronha, Brazil.

Although I like Ko Tao, my preferred is the island of Phuket . It has so many beautiful beaches as well as the whole range of different activities to keep you occupied. It is also a center of Thai culture, considering that it is a home to the best show of Thailand at Phuket FantaSea Thai Cultural Themepark – Thai equivalent of Disney World.
Marc- Bali is awesome and I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
Jerry- While I love Manhattan, I’m more of a Brooklyn guy.
dundili- Rather than bash Trip Advisor’s list, why not make a few recommendations…
Excellent – the hordes can go to these overrated places and I will enjoy my idyllic beaches. Seriously – use the map, be adventurous and discover beauty throughout the world. And if you have too much money, do go ahead and burn on the list above.
I would think a lot of people would pick Manhattan .
I can check two out of that list! Bali and Roatan!
I was near Ko Tao (Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan) and went to Hawaii (Big Island and Oahu) but not Maui.
Santorini is high up my list, and I’d like to go scuba diving in Turks & Caicos!
