The McDonald’s McRib is a guilty pleasure which I like to order when it’s available at the Golden Arches.
When I heard about a new Cantonese restaurant in Brooklyn offering an upscale version of the McRib, I had to give it a try. However, it isn’t easy to get a reservation at Bonnie’s and walk-ins aren’t easily accommodated unless you go early.
Bonnie’s opened around a year and a half back, we finally gave it a try a couple of weeks ago. (Reservations seem a bit easier to get over the summer…)
Here’s what we tried during our visit!Wun Tun Ravioli: Shrimp + Pork Wonton Raviolis, Superior Citrus Butter + Parm
The wontons were definitely more along the lines of an Italian ravioli. The noodle was thin and the shrimp and pork filling was very tasty. The best part may have been the citrus butter + parm. (I added butter noodles we ordered for Theo to the leftover sauce and it was delicious.)Hup To Ha: Shrimp, Candied Walnuts, Apple + Honey Kewpie Mayo
When I think of Walnut Shrimp, I think of a thick, gloppy, nasty sauce. This was nothing of the sort. The shrimp were big and delicious, covered in a thin tasty sauce. While the shrimps were awesome, the candied walnuts might just steal the show on this plate. I’d buy a bowl of them if they were offered on the menu!Cha Siu McRib: Cha Siu Glaze, Steamed Ribs, Chinese Hot Mustard, B&B Pickles + Milk Bun
I had high hopes for this upscale McDonald’s McRib (the main event) and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The milk bun was the perfect carrier for this beyond tasty slab of ribs and the glaze was sweet without being annoyingly sweet. We only noticed the hot mustard on a couple of bites and it was spicy so it was good that there wasn’t too much of it.
Overall, this was an incredible sandwich that I’d love to go back for in the future.Cho Nai Sundae: Malted Fried Milk, Ovaltine Hot Fudge, Vanilla Ice Cream + Buttered Peanuts
We were getting full at this point but after such an awesome meal, we wanted to try a dessert. This sundae was a real flavor bomb with so many great textures. This was a great end to an excellent meal!
Final Thoughts: I’m glad that we finally got to try the upscale version of the McDonald’s McRib at Bonnie’s. It was an amazing sandwich but the restaurant offers so much more than this upscale McD’s sandwich. I’d love to go again for another McRib and to try more items from their menu.
Bonnies is located at 398 Manhattan Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.
