McDonald’s Offered A Very Bizarre Menu Item In China!

While traveling to different countries, I love visiting McDonald’s to see what interesting items might be on the menu.

Over the years, we’ve had some tasty items like shrimp burgers, various fried cheese snacks and tasty desserts like French pastries and churros!

For one day only, McD’s in China offered an item which can probably best be described as weird and gross, although who am I to judge if I haven’t tried it…

The weird item being offered included two pretty famous and iconic brands. The item I’m talking about is the Spam and Oreo Burger!

When I first read about the sandwich, I thought I misread the headline or maybe it was a typo.

CNN wrote that the burger “featured two extra-thick slices of Spam — canned, cooked pork made by Hormel Foods Corporation — topped with Oreo crumbs and the brand’s classic burger sauce.

If McDonald’s added Spam to a burger I could see that being an interesting combination, but why the Oreo crumbs?!

CNN shared some details related to the burger from Abbie Xie, the communications manager for McDonald’s China. “Luncheon meat is a trending food among youngsters nowadays… The flavorful and crispy Oreo, on the other hand, is a snack youngsters are familiar with. By creatively combining the two foods, it doesn’t only showcase the collision of tastes and textures, it is also quite topical socially.”

So there you have it, McD’s China tried to create a socially trending burger for a day!

The burger was a members-only promo, only available with a voucher. The Spam and Oreo burger sold well and had lots of feedback both positive and negative.

So would I try this limited item? That’s a tough call but I have to admit that I probably would. However, I won’t be trying to recreate it at home like the article mentioned!

  1. Island Miler- LOL! I hear ya… The first time I ever tried Spam was at McD’s in American Samoa. Loved it and I now buy the Spam Lite singles from time to time.
