A couple dining at Balthazar in NYC got a pretty sweet deal when they ordered the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu.

Rather than get served the $18 bottle of wine they ordered, they were brought the restaurant’s most expensive bottle, a $2,000 Bordeaux!

The mistake occurred when a table of businessmen ordered the pricey bottle, a 1989 Chateau Mouton Rothschild Bordeaux. Instead, a young couple received their bottle. The businessmen were instead brought the cheap bottle of pinot noir the couple had ordered!

The wines were poured into identical decanters.

What makes the story really funny is that the businessmen drank the cheap wine and didn’t even realize. The New York Post mentions how, “the Wall Streeter who had ordered the Bordeaux for himself and three friends tasted the cheap pinot and — fancying himself a connoisseur — promptly praised its “purity.

In the end, the couple were extremely happy when they found out about the mistake, the businessmen didn’t really mind either. The mistake ended up costing Balthazar. The owner, Keith McNally “chose to eat the cost of the mistake.”

It’s good to hear that McNally didn’t place the blame on the restaurant’s managers who poured the bottles and brought them to the wrong tables.

  1. Your editing stinks. The title of the story has it spelled Bordeau. Look, you guys aren’t even traveling these days, the least you could do is get the easy stuff right.
