Review: McDonald’s Bizarre Anime Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce!

McDonald'sLast week, McDonald’s launched a bizarre (at least to me) Isekai anime promo.

During the promo, McDonald’s is offering a limited time Savory Chili WcDonald’s sauce. They’re also releasing WcDonald’s anime shorts.

I didn’t understand why the Golden Arches were being turned upside down until reading into what Isekai was.

According to mcdonalds.com, Isekai is a popular anime genre that explores a story’s main character who suddenly finds themselves transported to a parallel “otherworld.” A fixture across various anime and manga titles and genres, WcDonald’s has been an indelible part of anime culture for decades. From it comes the new Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce!

While I have no interest in anime shorts, I was curious about this new sauce packaged in a red cup with a shiny gold foil covering.

I stopped by McDonald’s a couple of days back to grab food for my kids and figured I’d give the sauce a try.

McD’s mentioned that the sauce is a delicious, sticky sauce straight from the WcDonald’s universe. It gets its unique characteristics from the unmistakable aroma and fiery warmth of ginger, lingering umami from garlic and soy sauce with a little punch of heat from chili flakes.

Here’s my thoughts on the Savory Chili WcDonald’s sauce:a group of packets on a tableThe first thing I noticed was how the packaging made the sauce stand out. However, it seemed to be cheaply made as one of the sauce was leaking, leaving some stickiness in the bag.a small container of sauceWhen I opened up the sauce packet, it smelled pretty good. I expected it to be more of a bright orange color than the darker brown it appeared to be…a hand holding a fried chicken with sauce in a red containerFor the tasting, I had to steal one of my little guy Theo’s nuggets. It just wouldn’t be right to try this new McDonald’s sauce without using the product it’s meant to be eaten with.

Upon first tiny bite, I liked the sauce. It was a bit garlicky and the heat definitely hit the back of my throat. Unfortunately, each time I dipped the nugget, I liked the sauce less. The heat seemed to get worse and I really wished it was closer in flavor to a sweet chili sauce…

Regardless, I love seeing new items offered at the Golden Arches!

Have you tried the Savory Chili WcDonald’s sauce? If so, what did you think?
