Machu Picchu, Peru would probably rank as one of Kim and my favorite sites which we’ve visited around the world.

When visiting this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can either hike there or take a train (most of the way). Kim and I took the train from Ollantaytambo.

In the future, I’d love to visit Machu Picchu again and do a trek to the site.

Lonely Planet writes that “Peru plans new Machu Picchu routes for 2020“. With reports of overcrowding at the site as well as on the trails, this is welcome news.

The Machu Picchu Council approved a budget of around $1.2 million for projects at the site. A big amount of the budget will be used for “maintenance work like renewing footpaths and building new lookouts, information centers, rest areas and waste stations, as well as funding a large-scale planting campaign – which will see one million native plants and trees grown along the pathways“, according to Lonely Planet.

The rest of the budget will go to create new access routes which will pass through different communities on the way to Machu Picchu. The projects main goals are to “highlight the natural, cultural, and social heritage of the region, while diversifying tourist attractions and boosting the local economy“. If the project is successful, it sounds like it can be a big win for tourists and locals.
