In late 2015 I wrote about how soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo would be opening boutique hotels. Since then his Pestana CR7 hotels have opened in Lisbon and Funchal.
Ronaldo is such a big star in Portugal that he was given a huge honor on his home island of Madeira a couple of days back. The airport on Madeira was named after him!
The airport is now known as Aeroporto Internacional da Madeira, Cristiano Ronaldo. Talk about an amazing honor but I find it a bit odd as I’d expect such a naming to be done as a memorial to someone who’s passed away.
Not everyone in Portugal agreed with the star’s name being added to the airport but Portugal’s president and prime minister both attended a ceremony where a plaque and bust of Cristiano Renaldo were unveiled.
The bust of Renaldo didn’t come out so well– you can check it out in the image above.
The airport isn’t the only place where Ronaldo has been honored. ESPN FC mentions how “Funchal’s landmark waterside square has in recent years become known informally as the “Praca CR7,” as it is now home to Ronaldo’s personal museum, a 3.4 metre tall bronze statue of the player, and the Pestana CR7 Funchal hotel“.
What do you think- should airports be renamed after young athletes? I’d say no. And as for that bust, it reminds me of a thinner version of Sloth from the movie Goonies.
