Airplanes are hit by lightning somewhat frequently but it rarely causes much issue. Airplanes are built to withstand lightning strikes but they can still cause problems at times.

An Air France plane was hit by lightning on May 19 and had to make an emergency landing.

The flight was heading to Birmingham Airport when the pilot “declared a mid-air emergency,” according to Travel + Leisure.

The lightning strike caused an alarm to go off and luckily nobody was hurt due to the incident.

T+L mentions that an Air France spokesperson said that the flight from Paris had an “emergency being declared as a precaution“. They also mentioned that no emergency response was needed.

I was curious to hear more about why an emergency landing was necessary and also wondered what kind of issue the alarm alerted the crew of.
