If you’re an aviation fan and/ or an Elvis collector, you might be interested in this.
The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley’s private planes which are currently on display at Graceland in Memphis are now hitting the market and are up for sale.
It just might take a small fortune to become the proud new owner!
Both planes, the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II are being sold together by Julien’s Auctions.
According to CNN Money, “both planes are for display only and cannot be flown” so if you planned on flying like the King, then that won’t be an option.
Both plane have been displayed at Graceland for the past 30+ years and have been a popular attraction.
The planes for sale:
Lisa Marie: Named for Elvis’ daughter, it was bought from Delta in 1975 for $250,000. Another $900,000 was thrown into it to turn the plane into his “Flying Graceland” or “The pride of Elvis Presley Airways” according to CNN.
The plane has room for 32 passengers & crew and was used for concert tours and other trips around the world. It is also “decked out in all the trappings of the King’s over-the-top lifestyle, including leather seating, solid gold seat belt buckles, a full bar and the penthouse bedroom”. The plane also has a conference room and other modern luxuries.
Hound Dog II: A Lockheed jet bought while the Lisa Marie was being refurbished seats eight to ten passengers and three crew.
The plane was customized to Presley’s taste and style. According to CNN, Elvis picked the color scheme out himself.
The auctions started on January 2 and are supposed to close early next month.
Anyone interested in buying a piece of rock and roll history?
Count me out. I’m not much of an Elvis fan and don’t think I’d have room to park the planes behind my building!
(Oh, I also wouldn’t be able to afford them. According to Yahoo, the planes are supposed to go for something like $10 million.)
