Win A Trip For 2 To New Orleans From Southwest

Southwest

Southwest Vacations is giving away a vacation package for 2 to New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in the U.S.

Last May we spent a few days in New Orleans. I had been there once before but didn’t have time to do a whole lot besides try some beignets and a hurricane. This time around I was able to spend some time wandering around, check out the sites and enjoyed the amazing dining scene around the city.

Flashback Friday: Visiting Santa’s Quarters

FlashbackFriWith Christmas just days away I thought of the perfect post to share for this week’s Flashback Friday.

I’m not exactly sure where people shop for their Christmas decorations and other items associated with the holiday. However, while visiting New Orleans back in May I think we found possibly the best Christmas store in the world.

Here is the post:

Visiting Santa’s Quarters- New Orleans

santaThis past May we went on a trip to New Orleans. We had a great time and the city quickly became one of our favorites in the United States. We had to shorten the length of our visit due to an invitation to attend a travel blogging conference called BAcon. There is a lot to do in N.O. so I’m sure that we’ll get back there at some point, hopefully sooner than later.
While walking around the French Market District we came across a store that seemed to be just a bit out of place.

Hotel Review: Astor Crowne Plaza- New Orleans

While planning our trip to New Orleans, I knew that I wanted to stay in the French Quarter or as close as possible without breaking the bank. Before I even started to look for a hotel, I came across a tweet by Ric Garrido of the Loyalty Traveler blog which helped make my decision very easy.
.
The tweet was for a post Priority Club Rewards Deep Discounts. Priority Club was adjusting their hotel award rates. Hotels going for 35,000- 40,000 points were currently available for 15,000 points per night.
.
I did a quick search and booked a room at the Astor Crowne Plaza located in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street.

New Orleans- Day 3 Recap

a map of a city

We started off our last day in New Orleans with a long list of things that we wanted to do but had to cut it down quite a bit. Day 3 was still a very busy one but we managed to squeeze in some time to relax. We visited a couple of museums, ate some more excellent food and Lucas had a lot of fun checking out the aquarium.

If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out my posts about Day 1 and Day 2.

Here is a recap of some of the things we did:

  • Visited the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum
  • Learned about Mardi Gras & Hurricane Katrina at The Presbytere
  • Lunch at Central Grocery- Home of the original Muffuletta
  • Lucas got messy at Cafe Du Monde
  • Had a drink at (possibly) the oldest structure used as a bar in the U.S.
  • Checked out the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
  • Had appetizers at the famous Acme Oyster House

Altering Our New Orleans Plans- We’re Heading to BAcon

In late January I wrote about a trip being planned to New Orleans. Kim and I were pretty excited to be heading there. I got to visit N.O. years back for work but didn’t get to explore too much and this would be Kim’s first time.

About a week after I wrote my post I got an invite by e-mail to a very interesting event taking place in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The event is called BAcon or BoardingArea Conference.

Well you might ask- What is BoardingArea?
BoardingArea is a travel blog aggregator site which hosts some of the best frequent flyer blogs all in one place. I check many of the BoardingArea blogs on a daily basis to find out what’s going on in the points & miles world.

Progress in Planning: New Orleans- May 2013

a map of a cityLast month I wrote about jetBlue’s True Blue program and the limited ways to extend the expiration date of the miles in your account. In the post I also mentioned how I decided to spend the bulk of my True Blue points towards a trip to New Orleans.
.

I was in New Orleans years back but didn’t get to see or do much. I flew through New Orleans to get to Mississippi. I was working on a story during my previous career working in television- news. My only experiences and memories of New Orleans were checking out Bourbon Street and eating some beignets at Cafe Du Monde. I’ve been wanting to go back for some time now and am looking forward to experiencing the city with Kim and Lucas.
