Packing For Two (Or Maybe 1.5)

While packing for our current Southeast Asia trip, Kim and I once again had to figure out the best way to pack. I knew that I was bringing one of my backpacks, the questions was which one? Could I squeeze all of my things plus most of Lucas’ into a 60 liter pack like I did for our trip to Barbados? For a 2+ week trip that wasn’t going to happen.
Our trip would be over double the time compared to Barbados. I decided to bring (give or take) the same amount of things for myself but Lucas would need a lot more clothing, toys and other supplies.

I decided to bring my 75 liter North Face backpack. When I finished packing my things, there was a ton of space left. I figured after packing Lucas’ gear I would still have some space left over. This was not happening. I ended up stuffing diapers in just about any empty space so we could buy as little as possible during the trip. You can see how I packed quite a few into the side water bottle holder in the pic below.

After I was done packing Lucas had a lot of fun using my backpack as his jungle gym. I never knew that my bag could be so much fun!
How would you pack if you were traveling with an infant?

Almost Time For Lucas’ First Flight

Lucas Miles W.- excited for his first flight
We’re pretty much ready for our first flight with Lucas. We’re leaving for the airport in a few hours. He will be flying to visit his first country outside of the US at a week shy of three months old. (Read about how we got our trip for free Thanks to Capital One.

It’s amazing how many extra things you need to bring on a trip when you add a little travel partner to the equation. A big debate was how many bags to bring on the trip. Lucas is allowed a free checked bag but Kim and I figured we could squeeze his things into our bags. Another thing we decided on was trying to bring all of the diapers he should need for the whole trip since they can be double the price in Barbados.

I was able to fit all of my clothes along with Lucas’ into my 60 liter backpack. Instead of keeping the outside pockets open for water, I was able to squeeze a bunch of diapers into each side. Every bit of space counts!

Maybe The North Face wants to consider marketing backpack side pockets as a multi-use storage area in the future!

This trip will definitely be a new experience for my wife and I due to now traveling with a baby. I can’t imagine what it will be like and know things will be very different but at the same time it will also be very exciting.
In addition to my usual posts, I’ll also be writing a little about our trip to Barbados so make sure to keep checking back!
