Last week I wrote about a couple who tragically fell to their death in Yosemite National Park at Taft Point.
There wasn’t much detail about the couple or what had happened to cause the tragedy. Last I had read, an investigation was under way to figure out what happened.
Yahoo reports that it appears now that the accident took place while the Indian couple were taking a selfie.
The couple were identified as Vishnu Viswanath, 29 and Meenakshi Moorthy, 30. They had a blog called Holidays and HappilyEverAfters where they posted about their trips.
Yahoo mentioned how in a recent Instagram post, Moorthy “posted a photo of her sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon and reflected about the “daredevilry” of taking pictures from dangerous locations.”
She also wrote, “Is our life worth just one photo?” Sad…
This isn’t the first time that taking a selfie has led to someone tragically dying. A couple fell to their death in Portugal just before the summer.
In the end, is it really worth putting your life in danger for a photo? I think we’d all agree that no, it isn’t.

It’s arrogance that led to their deaths. Instead of being careful they arrogantly thought that it was OK to take a photo in a dangerous spot. If they were less arrogant they could have taken the selfie a little bit further away from the edge.
It’s also superficial vanity that lead them to think that they needed to get the most spectacular shot possible to impress people. That’s the big problem with instagram: so many people trying to impress others.
Treesha999- I don’t disagree that it wasn’t avoidable. Regardless, I’d still call this tragic and you are right- it was stupid of them and they paid the ultimate price.
Completely avoidable. Tragic? Since you point out they knew about the daredevilry aspect of it and questioned its worth, I have to go with Not Tragic Just Completely Stupid.
