Are women kissing in the back of an Uber car disrespectful and inappropriate?
A lesbian couple was kicked out of an Uber car for kissing in the back seat on the way home over the weekend. The couple was heading from Pig Beach in Brooklyn to the East Village when the incident took place.
Gothamist reports that the, “lesbian Manhattan couple has filed a complaint with the NYC Human Rights Commission.”
One of the women, Alex Iovine says that the driver “reacted irrationally” and all they did was “peck”.
After the women kissed, the Uber driver told them to get out of the car once it got over the Manhattan Bridge. The couple initially thought that the driver was joking.
Iovine filmed the driver saying how what they did was illegal and disrespectful and that they’re not allowed to do it. (When I tried to play the video in the Gothamist post, it did not work.)
After one of the women informed the driver, Ahmed Elbotari that what they did wasn’t illegal and that they’d get him fired, he replied “I don’t give a shit.”
Elbotari claims “that the couple was simply acting obnoxious, with one of them forcing the other to smell her armpit, playing music loudly on their phones, putting feet on the seat. The driver said “he asked them to stop kissing and lower the volume on their phones” and insisted “he would do the same for a straight couple, but acknowledged he has less tolerance for a same-sex couple,” according to the Daily News.
Besides filing the complaint, the incident was also reported to Uber. Their $22 fare was returned and the ride share is investigating.
