NYC Tourist Stabbed in Head in Midtown

Visiting the big city can be scary and overwhelming for some and one NYC tourist had a bit of bad (and good) luck recently.

The man, 23 year old Connor Rasmussen came to New York to propose to his girlfriend. While out celebrating his engagement he got stabbed in the back of his head!

The attack took place in the intersection of 46th Street and Vanderbilt Avenue at 1:45 AM.

Rasmussen was with a few friends, searching for pizza when he got stabbed with a steak knife. Rasmussen noticed the man “walking behind him and told his friends to wait, at which point he was stabbed,” according to Gothamist. The attacker also tried punching one of the friends, a woman who only received a scratch on her face.

One of the craziest parts of the story is that it doesn’t seem to be a robbery attempt. Another friend mentioned how right after Rasmussen was stabbed, the man ran off.

Here’s the part where the victim got lucky.

The knife got Rasmussen near his neck, at the base of his skull. Rasmussen removed the knife and called the police. At Bellevue Hospital it was determined that he didn’t have any serious injuries. Supposedly, if the knife hit him an inch or two to over on either side, it would’ve killed him.

So is New York City getting less safe for tourists? I’d say no and this was just a random attack by someone who needs to be treated /locked up due to psychological issues.

  1. This is not a random event, but the direct consequence of defunding programs that treat the mentally ill. Proof that the safety net protects not only individuals at the margins, but everyone who lives in our diverse society.
