During our trip to Louisville and Nashville back in 2012, Kim, Lucas and I got to see KFC’s Colonel Sanders in a couple of places.
We saw him at the Louisville Visitor’s Center and we also visited his grave.
While KFC isn’t a place we ever eat at (or I at least can not recall the last time we have), Colonel Sanders is still a pretty cool pitch-man, mascot, symbol of the restaurant etc…
I found it interesting to read that KFC recently introduced a new Colonel.
The chain brought in actor George Hamilton to play their well recognized founder in the television ad for a specific product. Yahoo mentions that “Hamilton is the fourth actor to play Colonel Sanders since the chain brought back the figure in marketing last year. Jim Gaffigan, who followed in the footsteps of Norm MacDonald and Darrell Hammond, will continue to serve as Colonel Sanders in marketing for Original Recipe chicken“.
I don’t know about you but I had no clue that there were so many different Colonels!
Hamilton will play Colonel Sanders for their Extra Crispy Chicken. (Can’t say I knew what the product was or how it differed from other KFC chicken.) Extra Crispy is double breaded and open fried which is supposed to make it crunchier.
KFC CMO Kevin Hochman said that Hamilton was chosen since “he embodies the Extra Crispy brand“.
The reason why is actually pretty funny:
“Extra Crispy Chicken is fried to a golden brown. George Hamilton isn’t fried to a golden brown, but he is tanned to a golden brown”.
When I saw a photo of the new Colonel, I saw a hipper, more modern appearing face for the brand.
So what do you think- does KFC really need to have so many different actors portraying Colonel Sanders or should there be one face for the brand?
