While traveling (and at home), Kim and I love to visit local chocolate shops & factories that we come across.
Much like beer, chocolate comes in all different varieties and flavors which are definitely fun and enjoyable to sample.
At home, we are pretty lucky when it comes to chocolate. There are many notable places where amazing, local chocolates are produced. We have Mast Brothers, Jacques Torres, Nunu and Raaka just to name a few… (For those of you unfamiliar with chocolate around NYC, those mentioned here are all actually located in Brooklyn.)
When it comes to trying chocolate around the world, not so surprisingly my trip to Belgium comes to mind. My brother and I tried amazing chocolates in Ghent, Bruges, Brussels and on a day trip to Luxembourg! Another fond memory would be a visit to the Chocolate Museum in Cologne, Germany. There have been visits to many other places around the world, but those two trips are the ones that stand out most.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day last week, CN Traveler came up with a slideshow of “The World’s Best Cities For Chocolate Lovers”.
Here is CN Travelers picks:
- Brussels, Belgium
- Tain L’Hermitage, France
- Oaxaca, Mexico
- Broc, Switzerland
- London, England
- New York, NY
- San Francisco, CA
- Cologne, Germany
While I’ve been to 5 of the 8 cities from this list, I only recall having amazing chocolate experiences in Brussels, NY and Cologne. I had no clue that London had “artisan chocolates” to be found. When I visited San Francisco, I was way too young to know anything about good chocolate!
One other area that comes to mind when thinking about chocolate is Lititz, Pennsylvania- home to Wilbur Chocolates which we’ve visited in the past. Lititz also hosts a “Chocolate Walk” each year which we’ve been meaning to check out for a few years but something seems to always come up during that weekend.
So, for all of your chocolate lovers our there, do you have a favorite chocolate city in the US or around the world?
