Fodor’s: 10 Places To See Before They’re Gone

a close-up of a logoFodor’s has an interesting slide show of “amazing sights that are gradually disappearing“.  There are various factors leading to the demise of the 10 sites on this list.

According to the article “scientists contend that climate change is affecting oceans, reefs, beaches and even cities leading to potentially drastic changes“. The article also attributes development as another danger.

While looking over the list, a very different reason came to mind which might lead to the end for many of these sites- accessibility. Some of these sites used to be hard to get to which kept the crowds in check. However,  these days it’s not too hard to fly to (or close to) most of these sites. If you can’t fly there, boats and large cruiseships are always another option.

I’ve been to 5/10 sites in danger on this list and put their names in bold so you can see which ones they are.

Here is the list:

  • Easter Island– Chile
  • Antarctica
  • Machu Picchu & Choququirao- Peru
  • Mt. Kilimanjaro- Tanzania
  • Great Barrier Reef– Australia
  • Culebra & Vieques- Puerto Rico
  • Dead Sea– Israel & Jordan
  • Taj Mahal- Agra, India
  • Venice, Italy
  • Tibet

What are your thoughts on these amazing sites which might be disappearing? I think it would be a major loss for future generations to not have the opportunity to visit them.
