In late September, McDonald’s announced they were releasing a couple of new sauces.
The sauces, Sweet & Spicy Jam and Mambo sounded interesting with one common similarity, both are supposed to be spicy.
These new condiments were supposed to debut on October 9. However, we were able to order them almost a week earlier. While I rarely ever eat a McDonald’s McNugget, I had to use one or two as my tasting vessel. Here’s some details about the sauces (from McD’s Corporate):
Sweet & Spicy Jam: A jammy red pepper sauce with a tongue- numbing Szechuan peppercorn kick and extra heat from cayenne pepper; finished with apple cider vinegar…Fun Fact: this is the first-ever breakfast-inspired dipping sauce to hit US restaurants.
Mambo Sauce: A tomato-based, sweet, spicy and vinegary sauce; inspired by the regional Washington, D.C. area sauce staple.
Here are my thoughts on the sauces:
Sweet & Spicy Jam:The Sweet & Spicy Jam had a good texture (not too thick) which stuck well to the nugget. The flavor is hard to describe. I’d say it’s like a spicier sweet & sour sauce with a nice, subtle heat. As I dipped, I noticed the honey in it.
Mambo Sauce:I didn’t have any idea what Mambo sauce was until after trying it. From first taste, I did not like it. I found it to be way too spicy, I’d describe it as a way too hot barbecue sauce. No thanks!
Final Thoughts:
It’s always fun to see McDonald’s releasing new items. While I liked one of the two sauces, I wouldn’t consider them an exciting addition to the McD’s menu.
Have you tried these new sauces? If so, what did you think?
