Airbnb has been a good option to save money when hotels are too pricey. Booking through the site is also a viable option if you want to stay in a good location at a lower cost.

The problem with Airbnb is that you don’t always know exactly what you’re renting when you make a booking.

A woman from Boston booked a highly rated Airbnb in the Chelsea neighborhood in NYC only to find out when she arrived that it was located in a housing project.

The NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) complex is located between 25th and 28th Streets and 9th and 10th Avenues.

Booking a room in that vicinity for just $90 sounds like a steal but the woman and her daughter found out why it was such a good deal once they arrived. The woman, Rachel Valerio said the apartment smelled like gas. There was also a roach trap next to the bed!

Since the incident, the tenant was reported by Valerio.

The NYCHA says that it is illegal to sublet apartments on Airbnb and it is against the lease agreements. ABC 7 reports that, “Airbnb says it was unaware of the situation, and it supports a ban on rentals in affordable housing.”

The city council is now talking about having a hearing related to the situation.

How would you feel if you rented an apartment on Airbnb and it turned out being in a housing project?

  1. I hope the renter enjoyed that $90 minus Airbnb fees. She’s get evicted from that housing project and banned for all public housing.

Anyhow I thought that NYC city council banned Airbnb.
