Ikea stores are so massive that it’s easy to get lost inside. I know when we visit Ikea, Kim and I often have a difficult time finding the way to the exit!

When visiting Ikea, Lucas loves getting his 30 minutes of time at Smaland, the free, supervised play area. (Yes, I had to look up the exact name of the area.) From time to time, we also enjoy dining at the store’s restaurant.

Ikea is trying out a new concept starting next month in the US known as a city-center store. The full name of the store is the Ikea Planning Studio which will open at 999 Third Avenue in New York City on April 15.

A Planning Studio has already opened London.

These stores will be much smaller than your typical Ikea and will focus on “styled living areas that showcase a curated selection of smart solutions for city living“, according to Curbed.

A smaller space means that much less will be on display but Curbed says that “customers will be able to browse popular products.”

The stores will also be a huge help for those needed design and layout assistance. Ikea experts will be available to help out.

All purchases made at the new store will be delivered to customers for a fee. They’ll also be able to set up furniture assembly and installation through the store.

Ikea plans to open 30 more Planning Studio locations over the next three years. After the NYC opening, another will open in Paris in May.
