It’s getting really cold here in the New York City and to warm up and have something sweet to drink, I’ve been drinking a lot more hot chocolate over the past few weeks.
I’m not a coffee drinker or a huge fan of tea, so hot chocolate definitely hits the spot at times. It also makes for a good travel souvenir.
Over the years traveling, Kim and I have brought back hot chocolate from some of our trips. Places that come to mind are Guatemala, Trinidad and Pennsylvania.
I recently came across a very interesting and potentially useful article from Fodor’s. The topic- 15 Best Places To Drink Hot Chocolate in America was bound to make me thirsty.
Here are Fodor’s Top 15:
- Katherine Ann Confections- Chicago
- Cacao- Atlanta
- The Little Nell- Aspen, CO
- Compartes Chocolatier- Los Angeles
- La Chatelaine Chocolat Co- Bozeman, Montana
- Chocopolis- Seattle
- City Bakery- New York
- Artfully Chocolate- Alexandria, VA
- Serendipity 3- New York
- Mindy’s Hot Chocolate- Chicago
- Chocolate Lab- San Francisco
- Kakawa Chocolate House- Santa Fe, NM
- Caffe Vittoria- Boston
- French Broad Chocolates- Ashevilla, NC
- Xoco- Chicago
Based on Fodor’s list it would seem that Chicago is the best hot chocolate city in America, placing 3 shops in the top 15. New York City came in second with 2 locations placing.
I’ve only had hot chocolate (although it was frozen) from one place that made the list. I went to Serendipity 3 many years back and it was really delicious. I’ve also been wanting to visit City Bakery for years now. They run a month-long Hot Chocolate Festival every year, changing out different flavors each day.
If I had to pick a favorite hot chocolate, it would definitely be from Jacques Torres. We’ve been visiting his DUMBO shop in Brooklyn for years. He also has a bunch of locations in NYC. (I got to meet Jacques Torres last month at a United event where hot chocolate samples among other things were given out.)
As for store-bought hot chocolate mixes, I am not a fan of Swiss Miss or other typical supermarket varieties. If you could find it , I highly recommend Trader Joe’s Sipping Chocolate. I’m pretty sure its a seasonal item but now would be the time it should be coming out again.
Have you been to any of Fodor’s best places for hot chocolate? Do you have a favorite that didn’t make the list? If so, let us know what you recommend.
