If you’re looking for a cheap place to stay then Airbnb could definitely be a good option. If you’re looking for an interesting place to stay, Airbnb might also be a good place to search for a room.
Up until a week back, there was an apartment offered on Airbnb at Trump Tower.
While the apartment wasn’t renting for chump change, the price wasn’t really so outrageous when you consider that it’s in NYC, in a luxury building owned by the President of the United States.
The New York Times mentions how the apartment went for “$300 to $450 a night and renters would just need to go through an extensive Secret Service screening downstairs“.
The rental was doing really well, getting lots of views and also being booked up for most of March, April and May. However, the rental was taken down by Airbnb soon after the NY Times contacted the site.
The Times mentions how “It is illegal under state law to advertise and rent most apartments in New York for fewer than 30 days when the host is not present“.
A NY Times reporter made a reservation for the apartment through Airbnb’s instant booking option. Soon after he received a message from the owner. In the message, the owner said she would meet him downstair. She also asked that he tell building staff he was visiting her.
The owner, Lena Yelagina didn’t want the building staff to know he was an Airbnb guest. A couple of days later, she found out the renter was a Times reporter and canceled the reservation after the reporter said he would be writing an article about the apartment.
It’s crazy to think that an apartment could’ve been rented in Trump Tower, one of the most exclusive buildings in NYC.
