Each year I look forward to seeing which destinations make the New York Times list for Places To Go. (You can read a post about the 2015 NY Times list here.)
There are also quite a few other list related to places to go from Fodor’s, Frommer’s, Lonely Planet as well as many other travel sites and publications.
I recently came across a list of most popular international destinations for 2016 from AAA Travel.
AAA’s list is made up of the 10 most popular destinations for international travel. After looking over the press release a bit closer, I actually realized that it only covered half of the upcoming new year.
The list covers the most popular destinations through July 2016.
I wasn’t exactly sure how AAA came up with the destinations which made their list. However, I came across an article from Business Insider that mentioned “The list was curated according to AAA bookings for travel through July 2016“.
Here are the places that made the cut:
- London, England
- Rome, Italy
- Cancun, Mexico
- Paris, France
- Dublin, Ireland
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
- Montego Bay, Jamaica
- Vancouver, British Columbia
- Prague, Czech Republic
I’ve been to 7 of the destinations which made AAA’s list. The list does include some great places but I wouldn’t really call them very exciting. It would be nice to see more diversity in locations included. (Six European and four North American countries made the list.)
Based on the destinations named, it doesn’t seem that people who book travel with AAA go very far from home.
What do you think of AAA’s list of most popular international destinations for mid 2016?
Check out the AAA press release here.
Prateek- I agree. We’re hoping to visit Croatia at some point soon since we’ve really enjoyed the Balkans on two trips so far…
Ang- Nice. We liked Montego Bay. Nothing overly exciting but definitely an interesting place.
Alohadavekennedy- Awesome. Would love to hear what list you are working on!
Rich A.- Prob haven’t missed a lot! We liked Montego Bay and I’ve heard good things about Vancouver.
Geez, looks like I’ve done all 6 of the European locations but none of the others! Somehow I don’t feel I’ve missed much ——
We are ten for ten on the AAA list over here , but we are working up a completely different list for 2016.
I love these lists!!! I’ve been to 5 of the 10 cities above. I’ve been to DR and Jamaica, just not Punta Cana and Montego Bay.
Pretty standard list. I would include places that are unexplored, a couple from my recent travels like Zadar and Plitvice in Croatia stand out!
