Heavy and overweight tourists are being banned from riding donkeys on the Greek island of Santorini.
The reason for the ban is all about looking out for the animals.
If you’d like to take a ride on one of the island’s “famed donkeys” you’ll need to weigh less than 220 pounds or 1/5 of the animal’s body weight.
I’ve yet to visit Santorini so I don’t know much about their donkeys. USA Today mentions that “tourists often take donkey rides along the steep and narrow terrain of the popular island.” The article also mentions that due to this, activists have “raised concern” for the donkeys health.
New regulations state that donkeys should not be overloaded with weight. They also ban injured donkeys from working.
