I’m not one that tends to purchase miles or points. I’ve only done so a couple of times that I can recall, both times being from the limited Daily Getaways deals.
Club Carlson will be offering a Cyber Monday deal where you can get a 100% bonus when purchasing Gold Points.
I came across the upcoming offer in a tweet from Club Carlson.
While a 100% bonus sounds pretty interesting and tempting, I’m debating whether or not it might be worth going for this deal.
Some info about the offer:
On Cyber Monday, December 1 from 12:01 AM to 11:59 PM the 100% bonus points offer will be available.
Club Carlson allows you to buy up to 40,000 Gold Points per year. However, for this offer you are only allowed to buy from 1,000 and 10,000 points. This means that the maximum amount of points you can add to an account from the offer is 20,000.
Gold Points come in 1,000 points increments and cost $7 (.007¢ per point). So for Cyber Monday, you can spend $70 to get your 20,000 Gold Points. This offer (obviously) cuts the price in half making each point cost .0035¢ each.
20,000 points can certainly come in handy but it won’t really get you many options.
If you look at the chart above, you’ll see that your purchased points can get you two nights in a Category 1 or one night in a Category 2, both leaving you with some points still left in your account.
If you have the Club Carlson credit card then your purchase would be able to get you double the amount of nights shown above. (With the Bonus Award Night benefit, when you book 2 or more consecutive award nights, your last night is free. We never book more than 2 nights at a time due to this.)
Based on the discounted price a Category 1 award night would cost $31.50 (for credit card holders, 2 nights would be $15.75 each). A Category 2 would cost $52.50 (for credit card holders, 2 nights would be 26.25 each).
We’ve stayed in many Category 1 hotels. We usually find them to be an incredible value although not luxury…
Kim and I both have a good amount of Club Carlson Gold Points or else I’d definitely go for this offer. I’m still debating whether or not it might be worth spending $70 to get 20,000 additional Gold Points for each of us.
What are your thoughts on Club Carlson’s Cyber Monday sale? Are you going to be a buyer or pass on this deal?

antignos- I’ve found very good value going with the lower tier Club Carlson properties. It all depends on what your needs are. We’ve also enjoyed staying at some Radisson Blu properties but they don’t seem worth spending extra for unless it’s about the location…
FEV7- Great question. Based on the T&Cs my guess would be no you can’t. However, if you bought under the 40K allowed you can buy the difference and the bonus earned will not count towards reaching the yearly limit.
Thanks for your reply!
FEV7- Anytime!
If you were able to purchase points as part of the AmEx Daily Getaways in June, can you also buy points for this promotion?
Tough call. 131.00 a night at a top tier Radisson Blu in Europe would be nice (assuming you have the card), but I have almost always been disappointed by the hotels. Definitely not worth the 300-500 a night they ask usually.
