A plane made an emergency landing on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx, NY yesterday afternoon at around 3:20 PM. The most incredible part of the story is that nobody was seriously injured.
According to an article on Yahoo News, the small Piper PA-28 plan was heading back to Danbury Municipal Airport when it experienced engine problems. There were 3 passengers on board, a male pilot and two female passengers. All were taken to a Bronx hospitable for non-life threatening injuries.
I was surprised to hear that the plane didn’t collide with any cars or trucks but there is a good reason why.
According to the article:
A maintenance crew of city Department of Transportation workers fixing potholes on the northbound side of the highway noticed the plane in distress heading toward them and stopped traffic, clearing space for the plane to land, a DOT spokesman said.
The DOT crew then helped the plane’s occupants out of the aircraft and inside a heated truck until emergency workers arrived, the spokesman said.
The highway was closed until around 6 pm, before the plane was taken away on a flatbed truck.
