In late June I wrote about the upcoming date for the 2013 LaGuardia (LGA) Airport Runway Run in New York. I’ve been eagerly awaiting the event but after checking many times online, I never saw a race sign up webpage or received a follow-up e-mail regarding when registration would open online.
I received some e-mails from readers asking if I had any further information about the 5K. With the race date fast approacing, I figured something was not right so I decided to call the contact from the date announcement e-mail.
When I called, I reached a voicemail. The message stated that the representative would be out of work until the end of September. With the race scheduled for October 6, I couldn’t imagine that it was still happening.
A few days later I decided to call again. I figured I’d try to call the emergency contact phone # listed in the voicemail. I reached the Port Authority for LGA and explained what I was calling about.
The man who answered the phone knew about the runway run but was unsure of it’s status. He placed me on hold and went to get me some information. Soon after, I was transferred to the assistant for the race contact.
I was told that the race organizer was on leave so the 5K would be postponed. However, they weren’t sure of the details. I gave my phone number and got a call back a few days later.
I was told that the LaGuardia 5K Runway Run is indeed postponed and that the race will be rescheduled for the Spring, sometime in April.
Kim and I were looking forward to running on the runway at LGA again. I guess that we’ll just have to wait until Spring.
Has anyone else ran a race on an airport runway? If so, at which airport?
Will they be doing one for 2014???
Wow that was strange. I just wrote an extremely
long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t
show up. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.
Anyways, just wanted to say excellent blog!
I’ve done the MCBH Runway Run 5K in Hawaii. Pretty cool experience but a pain in the butt to get there as I had to clear security, register the car, etc.
