A couple of hours back I came across a tweet from USA Today’s Ben Mutzabaugh about some incredible fares for flights to Europe.
However these bargain basement prices might not be exactly what they seem.
WOW air, an Icelandic budget airline announced plans for flights to the US today. The airline will be flying to Boston and Baltimore/ Washington (BWI) with flights starting at an incredible $228 roundtrip, including tax.
But of course there’s got to be a catch…
You’re all-in fare (if you can find it) of $228 doesn’t include more than 5kg of carry on luggage!
You can pay to add up to an additional 7kg of carry on for $29 each way. Need to check a bag? That will cost you too. Checked bags weighing up to 20g will cost $48 each way. Want to bring some sports equipment or a bicycleor skis? That will be $52 each way.
We’re very lucky that there isn’t a charge to bring a stroller!
If you want to select your seats that will be $3. A seat with extra legroom could be had for $24.
(The fees for additional charges are based on a flight search I did for BOS-KEF for April. According to the article from USA Today, fees can vary.)
According to USA Today, WOW is only offering flights to three destinations from the US but they plan to offer more connections in the future. “For Boston and BWI passengers, WOW’s online booking engine was selling flights only to three destinations: nonstop to Reykjavik and one-stop connections to Copenhagen and London Gatwick”.
These prices are a special introductory fare to get the word out about the new routes. I wonder what regular prices will be going forward.
