I was a bit surprised to come across an article about plans to build an 883 foot “full scale recreation” of the Titanic. The plans were announced in New York at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
The reason I am so surprised is because you need to wonder- who would actually want to take a cruise on a ship named and modeled after one that tragically sunk?
According to Thrillist, the plans to build Titanic II are “the brainchild of Australian mining magnate/Titanic fanboy Clive Palmer”.
The ship will be built in China and hold 2,435 passengers and 900 crew. Features will include Turkish baths, a casino, gym, swimming pool and theater. The article goes on to state that the theater will be the main venue for entertainment since there will be no TV or WiFi on board.
The ship is set to take its maiden voyage from Shanghai to Southampton, UK and then on to New York in late 2016.
Would you consider taking a cruise on the Titanic II?
I probably wouldn’t for a couple of reasons. First off, I don’t like cruises and secondly it just sounds like a bad idea to get on a ship named after one which met such tragic doom back in 1912.

No, I would not go on a “Titanic” cruise, no matter how lavish or lush they made this one out to be. Out of respect for those who have perished during the tragedy, I would not go on it. I can’t even imagine how I could enjoy a cruise with that backdrop in the back of my mind (aside from that, I’m not a cruise person in general and have only taken two cruises ever), so it’s an absolute no go for me.
I think it’s a terrible idea, but that’s just me.
BOShappyflyer- I think it sounds like an interesting idea but also a bit weird due to the tragic fate of the Titanic. I also do not like cruises and would not be interesting in taking a cruise on Titanic II.
They haven’t even secured financing yet. This isn’t happening anywhere near 2016 or ever.
Dale- The plans do sound a bit crazy but I guess we’ll see what happens.
I would do it, but probably on the second voyage. Good to skip the maiden. 😉
Billy- Good point!
