A couple of weeks back I wrote about an Awesome New Pizzeria Within A Pizzeria that Kim and I tried out. Over the years blogging, I’ve written a bunch of times about pizza so many of you may know that it is my favorite food.
During our trips we love to try out the local varieties of pizza although it usually falls short of what we are used to at home. That’s not to say we haven’t had great pizza while traveling.
Here are some of our memorable pizza experiences:
- Very good pizza in Tokyo
- Pretty bad pizza throughout the Balkans
- Enjoyed a somewhat unique kind of pizza in Milwaukee
- Had very good and some bad pizza around Rome (and other parts of Italy)
- Chicago deep dish- Yum
- Apizza around New Haven, CT
- Always trying out new places in Brooklyn and around NYC constantly
- So many more…
The Daily Meal came up with a list of the World’s 10 Best Cities For Pizza.
When I saw the article I couldn’t wait to find out which cities made the cut (and to see which one’s I’ve visited).
Here is the list:
- New York, NY
- Naples, Italy
- Rome, Italy
- Boston, MA
- New Haven, CT
- San Francisco & Environs, CA
- Nice, France
- Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Melbourne, Australia
- Sao Paulo, Brazil
While I’ve been to 7 of the 10 cities from the list, I can only say that I’ve explored the pizza greatness in 3 of them- New York, New Haven and Rome.
I was a bit surprised to see Chicago missing from the list. Maybe this is due to their unique style which some might believe isn’t even pizza due to it’s extra thick crust. (I personally am a big fan.)
Are you a pizza lover? If so, where is your favorite city or place to grab a pie?
Find out about each of the World’s Best Pizza Cities according to The Daily Meal here.
P.S. If you happen to be in NYC and need any pizza recommendations, I’d be happy to help!
Hey Michael! Fellow New Yorker here! Just curious, can you please share your list of pizzerias in NYC? My favorites are: Goodfellas on Hylan Blvd in SI (do not like the other locations since they are not the same as this one), Deninos in SI, Brothers in SI, L&B Spumoni Gardens in BK, Di Faras in BK. I’ve been to Lombardi’s, Grimaldi’s, Artichoke Basille’s Pizza, Adrienne’s, but they don’t compare. I will have to try Julianna’s. Am I missing out on anything else? It seems like the majority of my favorites are in SI and Brooklyn.
Hey Ang! You’ve been to some good places but there are tons more! I’ve been thinking of putting together a Best of NY Pizza post at some point so for now I’ll just name a few that you should try out.
My favorite overall slice is New Park on Cross Bay Blvd, I’d also recommend Rubirosa in NYC and Paulie Gee in Greenpoint.
Since you’re in SI, I’m wondering if you’ve been to Lee’s Tavern? We went once and really liked it.
If you’d ike some more recs before I put together my list, you can shoot me an e-mail at michaelwtravels@gmail.com
Thanks!!! I will bookmark the ones you recommended! Funny thing, I’ve driven by New Park before and always wondered how the pizza was.
I have Lee’s Tavern on my list, but I haven’t had the chance to go yet. There was a list that was released maybe two weeks ago listing the best pizzeria’s in SI and Lee’s was on the list.
I will wait until you publish your list! Thanks so much!
JakePB- Guessing you like Chicago pizza too! You are totally right, these lists do tend to be subjective. I do recall that poll where SD was named #1 in the US for pizza and was a bit shocked. I haven’t been to SD but had also never before heard it get mentioned for its pizza!
Santastico- When we were in Sao Paulo years back we didn’t do much pizza tasting. If I had to choose, NY still gets my vote for best in the world.
Leslie H- New Haven does have awesome pizza! I also need to make a trip back that way to sample even more of it. Which places are your favorites? I’ve heard that SF has very good pizza but was only there when I was around 10 so don’t know from experience.
Went to college in New Haven and it has spoiled me for pizza for life. College students eat a lot of pizza, and I probably tried about every kind in the whole city in four years. Truly delicious. And a good variety too. Need to book a trip back there asap! Live in San Francisco now and it can’t compare. Not sure how SF made the list.
Sao Paulo, Brazil has the best pizza in the world. Even Italians that visit the city admit that Italian immigrants that moved to Brazil were able to make it even better than in Italy.
I’m always drawn to these types of articles and rankings. Thank you for recognizing Chicago and noting it’s absence. Because these things are subjective, the choices are typically scrutinized for both those places included and omitted. Case in point, one widely distributed US pizza ranking listed San Diego as having the best pizza in America. I live in San Diego and I love San Diego completely – I wouldn’t live anywhere else. But San Diego pizza?? Uh, no…
