Conde Naste Traveler has a slide-show which names the friendliest and unfriendliest cities in the United States. The results were taken from their annual Reader’s Choice Survey.
I always find it interesting to hear what people think about cities in regards to being nice, friendly, rude, cold etc… I think a person’s perception of a place has lot to do with how they act along with their own pre-conceived notions. I always find it best to visit a place with an open mind and judge for yourself in the end.
Here are the lists from CNTraveler-Friendliest Cities:
- Charleston, South Carolina
- Galena, Illinois
- Savannah, Georgia
- Asheville, North Carolina
- Austin, Texas
- Jackson, Mississippi (tie)
- Natchez, Mississippi (tie)
- Telluride, Colorado
- Sonoma, California
- Branson, Missouri
Unfriendliest Cities:
- Newark, New Jersey
- Oakland, California
- New Haven, Connecticut
- Detroit, Michigan
- Atlantic City, New Jersey
- Los Angeles, California
- Albany, New York
- Wilmington, Delaware
- Anaheim, California
- Sacramento California
I haven’t been to any of the friendliest cities in the U.S. and have only been to 4 of the unfriendliest cities so it’s hard for me to give an opinion on these cities’ friendly/unfriendlyness.
Have you ever found any U.S. cities to stand out for being friendly or unfriendly? If so, please share in the comments below.

jc- Interesting observations!
Rich A.- Enjoy Charleston. We almost went there last year. I’d love to hear what you think of it!
Cool! We’re off to Charleston in January —
funny how both Sonoma and Sacramento despite being relatively close to one another are at polar opposites. One might speculate that it may be the difference between politicians and wine makers. But who am I to judge!
Anything in the south is always friendly. I live in Vegas and trust me this can be a rough town.
Funny! Too much gambling and possibly losing your moeny can make any place a rough town!
