Baby Born In First Class During Flight From Paris To NY

A baby was born during an Air France flight from Paris to New York.

When the woman, Toyin Ogundipe went into labor, the flight attendants asked if any doctors were onboard and luckily there was.

Dr. Sij Hemal, a second-year urology resident at Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, stepped in.

The woman went into labor as the plane was flying over Greenland. T+L reports that, “Ogundipe’s contractions had accelerated so fast that the plane would not have been able to make an emergency landing in time.”

Ogundipe was moved to first class (free upgrade!) and the plane continued onto it’s destination, NYC.

After only a half hour in labor, a baby, named Jake was born.

When the plane landed in NYC at JFK Airport, mom and baby were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. They were released later in the day.

You might be happy to know that Dr. Hemal made his connecting flight to Cleveland . He got some help from airport officials to get through immigration. Air France gave a thank you gift, a bottle of champagne and a travel voucher. (First class seats I hope!)

I’m curious to know a few things:

  1. What country will Jake’s birth certificate state that he was born in?
  2. If mom is not a U.S. citizen, how does it work when he leaves the country? Does mom have to get him a passport?
  3. Did Air France award Jake free flights for life for being born during the flight or some other benefit?

Find out more from T+L here.

  1. Nicole Cary Strandburg- I was surprised that they were released that day too!

    Charlie- LOL

    Boraxo- Ahhh, good point. lol

Philip- I’d think French since they were flying Air France but not exactly sure.

    JAXBA- 🙂

  2. I’m thinking that the kid will not get birthright citizenship from the Trump administration, unless the parents are Norwegian…

  3. Babies born via natural birth (mother as well) should stay in PP for at least 24-48 hours after birth. This is for monitoring and newborn screening tests. My comment is in reply to “they were released later that day.”

    1. Nicole you missed this part “taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center” , a hospital in Tora Bora Afghanistan would treat you better then JMC .Imagine the standard of JMC .
