Emotional Support What??? on a Plane

Over the summer a bizarre emotional support animal got loose during a flight.

Back in 2014 an emotional support pig was kicked off of a flight. And while not flight or travel-related, a service kangaroo was kicked out of McDonald’s in 2015!

A couple of days back, I received a text with a very interesting story from my older brother.
When I saw the title of the article, I knew it was going to be good.

The New York Post wrote “This Duck Was On A Plane And Everyone Loved It.

Daniel, is a certified emotional support animal. What makes Daniel stand out is that he’s a 4 year old Indian Runner duck. (Can’t say I’ve heard of them before.)

Daniel made the news while flying from Charlotte to Asheville, North Carolina.

Another passenger, Mark Essig (@mark_essig) tweeted about the duck being his “seatmate”. He posted a photo of Daniel the Duck in red shoes and a Captain America diaper.

The owner of the duck is Carla Fitzgerald. According to the NY Post, she “developed PTSD after she was thrown from a horse and carriage she was steering and was hit by a driver who was texting“. (The Post got their info from ABC 7 Milwaukee.)

The Post mentions how the duck can tell when Fitzgerald is about to have a panic attack and calms her down.

Here is the funniest part of the story. The Post wrote how “She even shared a not very PC — as far as birds are concerned — meal with her feathered chum“. Mark Essig told the North Carolina paper that Daniel had Burger King chicken fries “which seemed to be verging on cannibalistic”.

What would you think if you saw an emotional support duck on a plane? I think it would definitely get quite a few smiles and laughs!

  1. Rich- The emotional support animal stuff does seem to be a bit ridiculous but it does make for fun stories! Leave the kids alone! What about adults who can’t control themselves during a flight!

  2. This “emotion support” nonsense is getting totally out of hand. Simply get a note from some dubious mental or medical professional(?) and FIDO can ride next you anywhere in the U.S. With that in mind, I guess I’ll get my “note” stating I always need an aisle seat due to the emotional stress of sitting in a middle or window seat. Oh, did I mention that also applies to sitting within 15 rows of a screaming child. Hey, we’re all privileged!
