Some of the shortest flights in the world include “Loganair’s journey from Westray to Papa Westray in Scotland’s Orkney Islands (which can take as little as 47 seconds), and various five-to-ten minute flights that include LIAT airline’s five-minute flight from St. Kitts to Nevis and Olympic Air’s 10-minute trip from Karpathos to Kasos,” according to Travel + Leisure.
Now a new flight in Canada will be joining the list with some of the shortest flights in the world and it will allow you to visit a pretty impressive site.
Greater Toronto Airways will start flying from Toronto to Niagara Falls starting on September 15. The flight will take a speedy 12 minutes!
When Kim and I visited Niagara Falls years back, we took a day trip from Toronto. The bus ride took somewhere in the 1-1.5 hour range. T+L mentions that the “options from Toronto to Niagara Falls include either a one-hour drive or 90-minute train ride“.
Taking a flight can greatly reduce the time it takes for the trip but if you choose this option, your still not taking into account the time it takes to get to and from the airport.
The flight also isn’t what I’d consider to be cheap, although also not astronomically high.
The airline will offer two options- commuter service (twice a day, Monday- Friday) or a private charter. Both options will be offered year-round.
The Cost:
- Commuter Service starts at $85 one way, $159 round trip
- Private Charter starts at $800 one way, $1,200 round trip. (Charters are on either a six or eight seater plane.)
Commuter Service Flight Times:
- Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport: 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM
- Niagara District Airport: 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM
Would you consider taking a short 12 minute flight to get from Toronto to Niagara Falls or would you just go with the usual slower options?

I’d drive it but I’m willing to drive coast to coast just for the scenery. I live in Ohio so I’d drive through Canada to Toronto….then coming back home by way of Niagara Falls into the States via the rainbow bridge. Then back home via I 90 or back roads depending if I’m not in a hurry.
This is actually 7 miles shorter than Air Canada’s existing 12-minute YVR-YYJ!
No way this can possibly represent a reasonable time saving.
Toronto to Niagara Falls is max 1.5hrs. Toronto to Billy Bishop is 10-15 mins, airport security, wait, boarding, 12 min flight, walk through airport, baggage claim (if any), then either picking up a rental car or getting a cab for the 20 minute drive from the airport to the falls. Might as well have just driven at that point and saved a bucket load of cash (particularly when not traveling alone, and let’s face it not many people visit the falls alone)
Sure…if you’re originating in Toronto. But the math works out better if you’re just connecting there, right?
Still no real time saving considering you would be most likely connecting from a different airline and would need to leave at least an hour between flights.
